There's bigger hockey news in Canada but I'm hearing Hal Gill is close to staying in Montreal. He is UFA July 1.

Confirmed

So if this is true:

Subban
Weber
Emelin
Diaz
Spacek
Gill.

Why is it taking so long to sign Gorges & Markov?

Renaud Lavoie of RDS saying the same

Hal Gill devrait s'entendre sous peu avec le Canadien. Un contrat d'une saison. Gill close to sign a one year deal with #habs.

"So long"? There's a month of possible negotiation time. The playoffs aren't even over. Easy now.

I'm not really surprised, I think he helped PK on and off the ice. Signing him for 1 year might bridge the gap until a guy like Yemelin can step in to bigger PK/shutdown minutes.

I'd rather play Weber at forward to be honest, he's a pretty good Bottom 6 Winger. I liked what I saw on the forecheck during the playoffs. Not overly strong, but works hard and is smart. And we don't know a lot about Diaz. Leaving:

Subban
Ememlin
Spacek
Gill
(Markov)
(Gorges)
and room for another D

Injuries would complicate the process. The Habs need to be sure they are 100% physically plus it affects the negotiation process.

Weber has a lot more value as a #4-5 puck mover and PP guy. Maybe he can play up front on occasion but he needs to get established on defense for the long run.

Whether this is good news or not depends on the contract. A cheap one year deal to play him 5-7 on the depth chart is good. I will be mad if they're looking to play him in a top 4 role again next year.

Ughh.... That's way more than I'd want to pay someone as limited as Gill.

But isn't Garrioch a guy that gets unfavorable comparisons to Eklund? Should this be taken seriously at all?

Don't see a problem with him getting the same salary. Only for another year, he was well worth what he was being paid last year. He was basically on our top pairing with subban for most of the year. Can't see a reason for a paycut other than age.

love it, hal is a great locker room guy.

kind of sad to see hammer go...its a shame how harsh some people treated him. Guy gave it his all every night.
