Ugh 2.25. They have to find someway to rid themselves of Spacek's contract for this defense to take the next step.

Its only a 1 year deal and Gill knows pretty well he wouldnt be offered more than 1.5M on free agency.. Gill is 1M overpaid but his leadership alone worth it..

We will have a pretty solid third pairing in Gill and Gorges..

Not happy at all. With Spacek not going anywhere this means Wiz is gone and any thought of an upgrade on defense is down the drains. ****.

Why would they offer 2.25 if he could have only gotten 1.5 as a UFA, that makes no sense. He averaged 20 minutes a night in the regular season and 23 in the playoffs, those are not Picard type minutes. I'm sure Gill could get 2.5 as a UFA.

Both Subban and Gill have gotten too good to waste babysitting Gill at even strength. Spacek already handles the veteran 3rd pairing duties. The only place for Gill in the lineup is as a cheap veteran 7, in which case 2 million is too much, or as a cheap 2nd pairing defender which means they're not looking to bring in a better top-4 defender. Gill doesn't have leverage, overpaying would be dumb no matter how you slice it.

Its not by signing Gill that we couldnt afford Wiz. Its Markov vs Wiz. Gill as shown by all the players is a huge part of the team. He wont play top 4 minutes.

And the summer hasnt even started. God damn some of you guys are pissy.

To the people saying 2.25 is too much, c'mon! This guy was a horse for our team last year. He played huge minutes, and never really looked bad. He is a great team guy, great locker room guy. Not only that, but he has helped Subban soo much this past year. Next year, we will have Emelin and Weber and I guess still Subban who have all had relatively little NHL experience. We need a guy like Gill to teach them the ways. I would have even taken Gill at 2.5.

Don't give me that Marky vs Wiz stuff. It's been done a bunch of times using Capgeek's cap calculator. And we can fit Wiz and Markov under the cap for 2012 and the seasons after.

Who knows where Subban would be if it were not for Gill. Cut Hal some slack. Well worth the money!

Markov and Wiz are both easily retainable with current salary space so long as you're not wasting it on other guys. Gill's money makes keeping Markov and bringing in someone good for the 2nd pairing (like Wisniewski for example) more difficult with every dollar above bargin basement for a defender (~1 million). A 2 million dollar Gill crimps the Habs style for anyone else they want.

LOL.
Ok so cap geek says its true, so it can happen.

Forget how much Wiz or Markov wants, or if Wiz even wants to be back.

Again, there is the whole summer ahead of us. And guys like Gill, as reported and said out loud by players, is a big part of the leadership & helps out the younger players. He is good on the PK and has proved to be valuable in the playoffs. He is prone to looking bad at times, but he is a valuable asset for the team.

Change it from Rumor to Confirmed Signing. I imagine he would get 2M$. So not bad of a deal.

If this is the case, then now moving Spacek is an actual priority. Before they could carry him on the 3rd pair for a year no problem. But 3rd pairing LD is the only spot on the lineup that makes sense for Gill to play. Gill-Subban was a brilliant stop-gap measure but it should only be short term. Expecting it to be your 2nd pairing for all of next season is a mistake.
