I think Chris puts the people he hasnt seen (like the new FA's we signed) as a D. All of them. Obviously this could be true, but the rankings are a crap shoot.

The only two I had not see going into the last grading period were Matt Read and Harry Zolnierczyk. Other players like Niko Hovinen and Tom Sestito were carry-overs from other writers, not necessarily grades that I have any control of until the next top 20s come out (as a rule we do not change grades or alter rankings in between top 20s).

I've seen the rest of the new prospects quite a bit, particularly CHL-based ones.

The D's are either representative of what other writers (who have seen specific players more extensively) have recommended or a representation (as is 95% of the cases among our prospect pool) my interpretation of what a "D" grade means.

There are very little B's because there are very few players I see closing in/coming near their full potential.

I've said in the past that we have a pretty decent selection of complimentary pieces. That doesn't mean all will make or that all will realize their potential though.

The flyers and Bertilsson are in contract talks.

Can be contracted

Bertilsson, who was one of seven runs in the JVM team last winter, was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in summer 2009. Soon it may be necessary to contract with the NHL club if you want to retain the rights to him.
- I talked to my agent yesterday and they are starting to talk about it becomes a contract or not. It is a bit loose, so far, "says Simon Bertilsson.

I like him. I think if he can get past his injuries he could be a solid shutdown defender who can move the puck.

Or he could be the next Ryan Parent. I really liked Ryan Parent, and I really like Simon Bertilsson. That's why I'm fairly cautious when I throw out expectations for him. Injuries, particularly ones that seem unending, are a big issue.

So I assume we lost the rights to Labreque, Riopel and Morrison yesterday? I would have liked to see Labreque signed but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Haven't heard anything, but not necessarily. Sometimes these minor announcements come later, or when the team is asked by the media.

This thread makes me sad. I wish we had at least one prospect to get even a little excited about.

Ranford?

Not to many players taken 2nd to last in a draft end up leading their league in scoring for most of the season as 18-year-olds.

Yea, I actually wasn't thinking of him for some reason.

He's still my favorite prospect though. He's been swept under the rug almost in terms of hype on HF because of Bob, but he's always been someone who really wanted to come to Philadelphia.

Freaking Rangers.

Erixon and a 5th for Horak and two 2nds.

We couldn't have matched that. Maybe if we threw a player at Calgary? Versteeg? Carle?

I would've LOVED to get Erixon.

Funny how a who's who of young SEL defensemen played in front of Sunshine this year; Erixon, Rundblad, and Larsson.

I have a feeling the Flyers are going to be like the Rangers in a few years. Throwing money at free agents can only get you so far...THEY NEED TO DEVELOP PLAYERS

Losing Bertilsson doesn't matter, he's YEARS away from even taking a spot on the terrible Phantoms. It was a pretty decent pick at the time, but he hasn't done anything since.

Injuries and injuries and injuries.

Even so, I thought we were going to have some kind of deal hammered out with him.

That said, still waiting on official word about guys like Labrecque, Morrison, and Riopel.

It's not looking good. The Flyers have demonstrated that they're willing to throw contracts at guys they like regardless of whether they are Flyers' draftees or free agent prospects. Just having a number next to your name doesn't guarantee you a tryout in Philadelphia even if the prospect pool is in shambles.

I don't consider that a legitimate fear...

1998 - Manny Malhotra
1999 - Pavel Brendl, Jamie Lundmark
2000 - N/A
2001 - Dan Blackburn
2002 - N/A
2003 - Hugh Jessiman
2004 - Al Montoya
2005 - Marc Staal
2006 - Bob Sanguinetti
2007 - Alexei Cherepanov
2008 - Michael Del Zotto
2009 - Chris Kreider
2010 - Dylan McIlrath

vs.

1998 - Simon Gagne
1999 - Maxime Ouellet
2000 - Justin Williams
2001 - Jeff Woywitka
2002 - Joni Pitkanen
2003 - Jeff Carter, Mike Richards
2004 - N/A
2005 - Steve Downie
2006 - Claude Giroux
2007 - James vanRiemsdyk
2008 - Luca Sbisa
2009 - N/A
2010 - N/A

Those are just the first round figures for the last 12 years, but I'm sure they explain a lot. I'm far more comfortable in our scouting and development programs than New York's.

Not only that, if you look at our team now, it's built more or less on trades and drafting rather than free agent signings. The Rangers are built on free-agent acquisitions.

Our team is more offensively and defensively talented.

Their team relies on a goaltender.

The amount of differences between us and the Rangers is astronomical. Believing that we will turn into them because we lack a legitimate prospect pool is unbelievable and inaccurate.

Eriksson will be fine. This was the first time he faced any sort of adversity in his career and he still finished with a 2.56GAA and a .906 Save Percentage. And let's not forget how horrible his numbers were to start the season.

This season woke him up and I think he's going to want to prove that he's the guy in Skelleftea next season. I think he'll rebound just fine and I'm expecting him to put on a clinic similar to how guys like Markstrom and Lundqvist did when they played in the SEL

While I agree they need to stop trading our top picks for the next several years, they won't turn out like the Rangers. We have four star caliber forwards at 26 or under. As of right now, three young top four defenseman. And Bob/Eriksson are two young goaltenders. You are able to throw money at free agents if you are only two or three players away from a championship caliber team.

With Richards/Carter/Giroux/JVR/Meszaros/Coburn/Carle for the future, we will always be a playoff team with them leading the way. After Timonen/Briere/Hartnell's contracts run out, you use that money on another #1 defenseman and another very good forward.

The fact that this team drafted very well for a 3-4 year period gives them an opportunity to trade high draft picks for the missing pieces. I'd like to see them get 2-3 more high level prospects in the system though over the next two years.

TSN says Riopel was signed last summer to an ELC

http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=6147

EDIT: It was a AHL deal, don't know how this effects it
