And don't take what I said about the "trade" so literally - of course he traded for the right to Patrick White, my opinion is that it was with the understanding that the Sharks would not sign him and get the compensatory pick.
Absolutely correct..
Team retains the RIGHTS to the PLAYER but only gets compensation IF the team offers the player a "BONO FIDE" offer ..

The ONLY way that DW could be sure of the 2nd rd pick is IF CANUCKS HAD MADE A "BONO FIDE" OFFER TO WHITE before they traded his rights to SJ and WHITE refused to accpet the offer.

Read the article on HABS site which explains why/how Montreal got the 2nd rd compensation

Max, read the HABS article and read the CBA paragraph .. maybe the Canucks had made an offer to White and he refused which would negate the requirement for another offer. ..

also I am not sure Wrenn needs to be signed by Jun 1st ..The CBA states in 8.6 (c)

(ii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at
the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide
college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in
the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student
through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall
retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the
fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft.
The Club
need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such
rights

No. I explained this earlier. Unsigned 1st rounder compensation is a 2nd rounder of the same pick # as the player that was not signed.

The Sharks will get the 24th pick of the second round in 2012 for not signing White. Regardless of whether the Canucks make it back to the final or blow up spectacularly and finish dead last.

Varone and Belieke will not be signed. They shall re-enter the draft.

Alberthauser has been offered a contract.

The Sharks may simply not have room for another center.

I don't know that he had much of a NHL future. Varone is exactly the type of forward I want them going after in the later rounds, small but with grit and offense. Unfortunately, many won't make it, but those who do have legit shots at top 6 forward spots.

The big sharks have room for one more center (and that may be Nichol, Desjardin, or McCarty). However, given the loss of Couture, Vesce, and Desjardin, the Woostah sharks are short their top three centers from the year they made the playoffs. They will get assistance in the form of Viedensky, but they definitely need more skill at the center position. I'd have liked to see him stay for that reason, as I feel he could be a solid addition to the baby sharks.

I also was surprised to see they let Varone go, but as I said, they may feel his NHL potential wasn't worth keeping him.

I was thinking similarly. Longshot for the show, but big boost for Woostah. It sure as heck doesn't appear to me guys like Marcou and Lucia.

I don't think he had much of an NHL future either but I did think he'd help the WorSharks so I'm pretty surprised they didn't sign him.

On the other hand, they signed 3 new guys recently all who should be playing in the AHL next year in Reid, Connolly and Livingston and then there's Viedensky...so maybe they don't have room for him there either.

This isn't speculation anymore, so there's a proper thread for it now.
