DAL GM Joe Nieuwendyk says offers made to Richards pre-trade deadline were rejected. No offer now doesn't mean there weren't prior offers.

NYP_Brooksie Larry Brooks
From everything I know, this stuff about Richards not wanting to play in major media market is pure nonsense.

We aren't going to believe Bob's news are we?

If we're going to trust him, we may as well trust Eklund.

Bob is a terrible rumor starter.

Just spoke with Brad Richards regarding news that Stars won't make him an offer before July 1. ``Obviously I have to move on,’’ Richards said. ``I had fun in Dallas and I like the city. But the (ownership) situation is unclear so I really didn’t have a chance to stay there. I will move on and look forward to the opportunity to being a free agent. I’ve never had that chance in my career. It’s a real big moment in my life to say the least.’’

Also asked Richards about waiving his no-movement clause should the Stars get a good offer. ``It would be great to try and help Dallas out if something was reasonable and made sense for both sides,” said Richards. ``But we’ll see what happens. You never know what will happen. I think my mindset right now is to see how many options I have.’’

Confused about that. Haven't UFA rights been traded since the lockout? (they have, because I can think of two UFAs right off the top of my head... Bouwmeester and Hamhuis)

Why would the NHL change their policy now?

Why would he say this unless it's some retarded Burke ploy to do...something.

Teams have done this all the time in the past

Everything just keeps going in our favor.

Burke was on NHL Live today and kinda hinted that TOR wouldn't attempt to trade for his rights.

Yet another team down.
Hm? I heard it. That's not really what he said.

Maybe Joe has not talked to Burke because Richards doesn't want to go there

Quote:
So what now? Nieuwendyk would not comment any further, but other NHL sources told ESPN.com Thursday that the Stars will try to move Richards' rights before July 1 in order to gain some value for Richards and a few NHL teams have already inquired.

Thing is, Richards has a no-movement clause, so it's totally up to him whether or not he wants to have his rights traded.

Nieuwendyk can look all he wants, but it certainly sounds like Richards wants to see what his offers are July 1 based on LeBrun's comments. You know what? It doesn't seem like he's completely opposed to it either. But he seems excited at the prospect of being a UFA.

Yeah... I think it is a forgone conclusion at this point. I mean there really is no better fit than BR and the Rangers. Trading for his rights will be interesting over the next month mainly because the Rangers might not need to. BUT... what if a contending team trades for his rights and makes him an offer he can't refuse. Interesting stuff!

Perhaps they're worried about a collusive agreement where Richards agrees to waive his NTC for a team he has no intention of signing with for Nieuwy's benefit?

I just talked to Pat Morris, the agent for Brad Richards, and while he would not say definitively that Richards would not waive his no-trade clause before the July 1 free agent deadline, he did say that Ricards has to do what's best for himself. ``I'm not aware of another player in this situation who has waived his no-trade clause, and I think there is a reason for that,'' Morris said. ``Accepting a move to another team creates an obligation, and you have to be pretty sure about that obligation. I think Brad has to do what's best for himself and keep his options open.
Quote:
`In a perfect world, you would love to help out the Dallas Stars and let them get something, but it would have to be the right fit,'' Morris said. ``I think that's the best way to view this is that Brad has earned this right and it's not something that should be given away easily. It's a very important time in his career and a very important decision.''

Right fit. Morris just said Richards will waive for the right team. Not any random team.

Joe Nieuwendyk is not aware of any change in policy. He has said the Stars are trying to trade the rights and the agent is discussing Richards ability to call his own shots.

Teams he might be willing to go to:

Buffalo
Detroit
Toronto
Los Angeles
Tampa Bay

Not saying that those teams will necessarily pursue him, but they make some sense and have the space.

No one with any real understanding of the Rangers situation thinks we can't do this. Hell, we can sign Richards without any buyouts at all, at the moment.

Well, based on Richards comments, it seems he wants to keep his options open and go to July 1. His agent implies that Richards doesn't want to waive for a team and not sign a deal with them.

So basically, if he does waive, there's probably a 99% chance he'll sign with that team, or he won't waive at all and hit UFA.
