I read this as something that would hit a lot of the teams out of left field.
What leverage do the teams have? Isn't the player being given the choice of resigning or going into free agency/the draft again?
Why would Ericsson resign when he would have to leap frog Bob, Hoivonen, and possibly Bryz for the next 5 years?
Sucks losing him or any decent prospect, obviously. Was Ericcson going to be a starter this season? This would be his first season as a starter in the Elite League at age 22/23?
Eriksson is a strong goalie, but he's still a GOALTENDING PROSPECT.
There's no value in that.
So trading him for what? If a team wanted him and knew what was going on they could just spend a pick to get his rights instead of trading one to Holmgren for him. Then they keep Eriksson's rights instead of signing him.
So this isn't a "sign him or trade him" asset situation...
This is...
You see the damn deadline coming, and you make sure he's signed.
i know this isnt Tim Erizon who appears would only play for the Rangers.
I disagree. The guy was highly regarded by some wasnt he? he was a good prospect. If the Flyers couldnt get him signed you trade him for something. I do agree. this shouldnt of been an issue. you get the guy signed.
2 things I want to know.
How agressively where the Flyers looking to get him signed?
Were the Flyers confused by the euro transfer rules?
Honestly, This is completely baffling, and some wonder why we have a laughing stock of a prospect pool which got worse in the last 72 hours.
I see you're trading our picks,
Letting prospects walk.
And I'm like, **** yOOuuu
(ooh hoo hooo)
And now the space in our cap
Just isn't enough
I'm like, **** yoUUUuuu
edit: "And now the youth in our pool, Just isn't enough" works too if you'd like to scream that line in your rage-singing instead.
And **** Luukko too
Snider said if he was richer, he'd still with ya
Ha, well ain't that some ****? (Ain't that some ****!)
And though there's no Cup in our case,
I still wanna say to your face...
**** you! (Ooh hoo hooo!)
Yeah, I'm sorry, can't afford a goalie
But that don't me I can't waste some cap
Maybe we'll never get another trophy,
But at least we don't play the trap!
I pity the fooooool who believes in you
(Oh **** he's a gravedigger)
Well
(Just thought you should know, *****!)
Oooooh I've got some news for you
Why don't you run and tell your little owner...

Eriksson > Hoivonen.
Also it doesnt matter if he was a starter. He could have said he wanted to come over last year and play in the AHL, where we had Steward starting at one time.
Markstrom started in the top league for a good amount of time, came to NA and did pretty bad last season. It really doesnt matter till he gets over here. He stays over there to continue to work and progress waiting for a spot.
He is or was our top prospect. You dont just let him walk.
That's brilliant, Ghost! Let me just combine our efforts here:

The biggest issue in pissing away draft picks (both overpaying in trades and not signing players with a half decent shot at making it to the NHL and/or being a good AHL'er with an occasional callup when needed) is that eventually the only players available to the team will be higher priced. In a salary cap world, teams need to have low cost players in the mix, to allow cap space to have a couple of high end players.
The Flyers have maybe 3 guys on entry level deals that they can call upon. After that, it's a wasteland.
That may be true, but when you really havent drafted a good goalie in a long, long time, you dont go giving up the only promising one.
Great, we have Hoivenen. After that Morrison, Riopel and Steward. I cant beleive they would keep those three over Eriksson.
Hovinen is the only remaining prospect. Morrison wasn't signed, Riopel is only signed to an AHL contract, which expires at June 30 (NHL UFA) and Stewart ELC ends as well.

Like I said, in a few seasons this team is going to be an older team, in need of a rebuild. What's that? Oh we don't have any ****ing prospects, thanks a lot Paul Holmgren.

Oh I know. I didnt say it, but I meant as in if they signed them.

yeah which is what drives me crazy about the "our core is young" mentality. Take a look at teams in our division and look at what they have for prospects. Then take a look at what we have. its a disgrace. At what point do you decide that its not ok? we need to start building up our prospect now. we cant wait until the "core" is older.

I was of the "our core is young mentality," but you can't continuously make high draft picks throw ins in trades. You can withstand the blow for a couple years, but its pretty much gotten out of hand. The thing that sucks is we know its not going to change anytime soon.

Did they let him just walk? Or, were they in a position with no leverage because of the new agreement?
It will be interesting to see what Eriksson's POV on the matter is if he is ever asked.
I didn't even think about that. We go out and sign ****ing Niko Voinenen and then decide to piss away our best damn prospect. Of course, I won't give a damn as long as we get Vokoun or Bryz.

I am waiting for a logical explanation from Holmgren. I am not sure if would get one tho.
I know Eriksson wasnt a elite prospect. That isnt the point. it just looks like he was let go without even an offer being made. Did anyone hear anything that he was even offered a contract? All we heard about the guy was when he was moving up in leagues in Sweden.
