QMJHL 2011 Draft "Pass" Question

Wordering if you would mind explaining to me why QMJHL teams "pass" on their late round draft picks.

There must be an advantage or reason to pass instead of just picking "someone"

Thanks

Teams have a limited number of spots on a protected list. Thus, some teams may have a couple Europeans who are "confirmed" to come over next season. Since the CHL Import Draft is largely a show, as teams don't draft players who haven't said they won't come and play for them, they know in advance of it who they are picking. Thus, if a certain team has two players who are coming over and only two spots left on their protected list, they would pass on a late round pick to ensure they have room for their Euros.

It could also be due to the Lewiston dispersal draft, that teams need room to pick up some players from the former Maineiacs too. Drafting for the sake of drafting never makes sense since you are likely stuck with someone you didn't really want in the first place.

The Lewiston dispersal draft happened before the entry draft. But you are right on the reason teams pass on late picks is that they are limited on the number of players they can hold rights to.
