Islanders not expected to bring back Konopka

According to Chris Bottas latest post, the Islanders will look to bring back Gillies and Haley, and they will more than likely let Konokpa walk on July 1st. So far, no contract has been discussed.

Zenon will find a good home on July 1st. He doesn't have a ton of skill, but he plays with a lot of heart and he's good at faceoffs. He was the one who helped the young Islanders play with grit after the All Star Break. Not a huge loss for the Islanders, but a loss nontheless.

Good luck to Zenon. Maybe something happens, but by all accounts, he'll be free to sign anywhere July 1st. Good luck Z, you were a class act!

I wish we could take him back here, but we're already overstocked on centers, and would become moreso if that Carter deal happens.

From reading the blog, it seems rather likely Gillies and Haley will be back (Both are being booked for Islander public appearances and it would look bad to not sign them after that). Botta says he believes Konopka would have moved at the deadline if anyone would have offered more than a 4th round pick for him. I don't get this, if you're not planning on bringing him back and not making the playoffs, why would you simply not take the highest offer for him, regardless of whether or not it's a 4th round pick!?

Hope Edmonton scoops him up, exactly what they need right now.

I was hoping we'd seen the last of Gillies at the NHL level

Wait, so they are letting Konopka go but keeping Gillies? I just don't understand that logic, unless they want to say Gillies is a heavyweight...

Gilles is a heavyweight. Konopka's a middleweight but he'll fight most guys.

Gillies is a lot better of a fighter than Konopka. But much more of a waste as well. Konopka is not too useful either other than his faceoff abilities and a vet in the locker room.

Honestly not sad at all to see him go...

The Islanders need a more versatile 4th line center who can PK, I'm thinking Richard Park-like... someone like Ryan Johnson (maybe 750 for a year, I mean that would easily be his highest offer I think).

Well if the islanders was a playoff team then no I wouldn't. What he offers his team probably would help at the playoff level of play. Considering that the islanders weren't......yes it was stupid. I wouldn't mind him back on the bolts. We were eaten alive at the faceoff circle.

If you accept any jack **** offer for your players, all you'll get is jack **** offers for your players.

Also, the Isles may have felt they couldn't adequately replace him for the rest of the season.

At the trade deadline you couldn't have pried Konopka from many Isles fans' cold dead fingers. Wonder what those folks are thinking right now...

I thought the whole reason he wasn't traded at the deadline was because they were gonna bring him back... for a team that has always had poor asset management (just look at who they have drafted over the past 20 years, and who they decided to keep) this just seems it never ends... a playoff team would have given a pick for a guy with his kind of faceoff ability.

precedents. its why they also didnt unload martinek this year and roloson two years ago. its to show that you wont go below your set price.

Not at all. Prototypical Burke player, great at faceoffs.. Throw him, Brown and Orr on a line , and a lot of players will be hurting.

ya. would much rather him on our fourth line than shelley. he'd probably me a smidge cheaper too, although theoretically shelley should be much cheaper than shelley is.
