Doesn't look as great when your 2 D anchors are long in the tooth and have health issues with Pronger's being the most suspect.
I'm kind of ageeing I'm not so sure it's good this year to thin ourselves out on D..best to do it at forward but maybe the right trade(s) can mitigate most of the issues.
I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I think Pronger plays 70 to 75 games this year. Last season was the first time in seven seasons that he played less than 66 games. I know he's older, but he's also exceptionally conditioned. I think with the fact that the Flyers are four deep with defensemen (Coburn, Carle, Timonen and Meszaros), Pronger really doesn't need to play 25 to 30 minutes a night anymore to be effective. As well, if he misses 20 to 25 games, it's not a devastating loss to be without him.
As for the back surgery Pronger had, he had it in May, so you've got June, July and August to heal up and September and October to work himself back into shape. There's plenty of time for Pronger to heal up. I really think he'll be in the lineup come opening night.

Without Pronger, Carle is probably as bad a choice as we can make.

Eh, dont know why Gustafsson on the 3rd pairing is yikes... Im pretty sure he will fight for that 6th d-man and probably get it. Time to trust a phantom or two.
Actually, taking a look at things, I wouldn't be opposed if a guy like Drew Shore and a draft pick (preferably a 2nd round pick) came back for Versteeg. I think Shore would be a nice fit in Philadelphia and the 2nd would certainly help in restocking the prospect pipeline. Shore has good size, good hands, is physical and would be ready in about two more years (people forget that he just turned 20 this year - a year in the minors and then bring him up to the pros after that). I'm starting to like the idea of Drew Shore being a Flyer more and more.....

I agree. Honestly, I think we'll trade Carle and our defense will look like this:
maybe homer does a genius move and eats it on the versteeg trade, moves him with shelley and walker for some draft picks and or a character player and bam!
eliminate those 3 guys we have 6 mill of cap space, thats a bryzgalov.
what if we traded Hartnell? i dont know what it is about him... but i hate him at 4.2 mill a year

Or just waive Shelley and Walker (and Leighton), stick them in the AHL, and get something of value for Versteeg.
The thought of having Larsson and Gudbranson ready to take over for timmo and Prongs is too good to pass up. Yeah we are giving up the only proven player in the deal but id do it in a heart beat.

Yeah, and we can also forget about winning anytime soon.
i'm surprised that people undervalue steeg and carle so much.

I disagree.
I actually want to move Carle because I think he DOES have value. (I'm of the opinion that Carle, Hartnell, and Versteeg are really the only options to be moved, as they aren't critical and they make substantial money.) Versteeg had a rough year, and therefore would probably not fetch what we had paid to get him, which, imo, makes it unlikely he's the one to go.
