Aaron Portzline:

Multiple NHL sources have told The Dispatch that the Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers have discussed a trade that would send Flyers center Jeff Carter, an All-Star in 2009, to Columbus for a top-six forward and the No. 8 overall pick in this year's draft. That top-six forward, presumably, is 21-year-old Blue Jackets winger Jake Voracek, a restricted free agent.

I'm skeptical mostly because Philly has far better ways to save cap, and at least one of them involves sending us Carle to boost our second D pairing. But I still hold out hope, if only because if it doesn't happen I'm sure I'll have another swarm of "OMFG HOWSON COULDNT GET IT DONE FIRE HIM FIRE HIM" idiots to beat the snot out of.

It's very much like managing a zombie outbreak, only instead of animated dead it's unrepentant stupid, and as much as I might want to I'm not actually allowed to shoot anybody in the head.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

There is a report that they were/are in talks, but Bob McKenzie also tweeted that Philly isn't looking to move Carter. I guess it's really a matter of picking who you want to believe.

the thing is centers generally don't know how to play defense on the wing. you can't play d at wing like you do at center, it just doesn't work. they have to play their whole career at wing or else defensively they will be weak.

voted c though because a lot of the system seems to be stocked with wingers but no top line talent centers

Wing. Unlike in years past, we seem to have a lot of folks who can take draws. I know our top centers aren't on par with what other teams would call top liners...but they are capable. I'm more worried about the wings, though.

We should also remember that we are likely replacing the likes of Sullivan, Ward, and maybe Dumont...that should open up a top 2-3 wing spot for someone.

Except Burrows is a winger playing with what one would have to consider a number 1 center in Sedin (though a weak one), so it's kind of the opposite situation where a good center is making a decent winger look good.

Legwand and Erat have shown the ability to produce big points with an effective winger on their line. I think going after a RW for those two could be huge. The problem is finding someone who reignites the fire they had in 2007

Far less defensive responsibilities on wing than center and almost all NHL centers could move the to wing with very little worries on the defensive coverage...
