Darche is an underrated player. Should be cheap, too.

What about David Steckel ?

6'5, kinda physical. Would be the best on faceoffs we've had since Yanic Perrault. Not the best offensively, and from what I remember isn't that tough of a fighter. We, however need someone who wins faceoffs. Last year had 63%

Did you watch any games this season? Or did you just choose to ignore Darche's obviously improved play to where he was an asset to the team?

I think if Eric Cole goes to FA, PG should make a big push to get him. 26 goals last season, 22 at Even Strength, 9 GWG, and 225 hits. Listed at 6'2, 200lbs, still has good speed, and I think he'd be a great fit with Pleks and Cammalleri. Carolina probably doesn't want to let him walk, but he may want to test the market July 1, and see what he could get. $3,750,000 if the cap goes up 2 million would be manageable for PG on a 2 or 3 year deal.

It's going to be tough to top that eloquence, but I'll give it my best:

1- As a defensive center, I believe Drury would be an upgrade. Halpern wasn't the same player by the end of the season as he was at the beginning, I think injuries may have taken their toll on his stamina. Drury is that right shooting center that the Habs always make sure to have. His faceoff % was 56.4 last season, 52.9 the season before. Over half of his faceoffs last season were taken short handed. He took twice as many faceoffs in the defensive zone as in the offensive zone, negatively affecting his scoring totals, but showing how much confidence Tortorella placed in his defensive abilities. Given his situation, I believe there's a good chance Drury would be willing to accept a 1 year contract, which would also be ideal for the Habs' situation. I was liberal with his salary because that's just how I estimate UFA signings, just to make sure the lineup is realistic.

2- Versteeg clearly doesn't suck. He is in that Higgins/Cleary family of players that can't be depended on to carry a scoring line, but can excel with linemates better than they are. That is a step better than Pouliot, who I believe can excel against inferior opposition, but not against good opposition, even if his linemates are also good. On top of that, Versteeg is more well rounded than Pouliot, and I can see a player with his skillset (smart, fast, tenacious) doing well under Martin.

3- Stortini is no Laraque or MacIntyre, but he is a better player than them, and other players will actually fight him. I think he is a victim of the youth movement in Edmonton. Not that a team should rely on him too much (I do have him as the 15th forward), but I think he can play a role against poor teams that fight a lot (Leafs, Flames, Islanders) without costing his team too much on the ice. BTW, the Huggy Bear nickname is from his rookie year of 06-07, his fighting got better with experience.

Why on Earth would the Habs have to bring more help than Jagr.We took Boston three games lost three in OT and it looks like they may take Vancouver. The defence has gotten younger and stronger with plenty of depth in the system in offence as well as defence.

If we could somehow fit Konopka and ditch one of Pyatt/Darche, this would the IDEAL lineup. Plus we'd have 2 goalies who can fight

Probably not enough for Laich. Maybe not enough for Wizniewski. Don't really get the idea that Jagr signs in Mtl because he likes playing with Plekanic and then they get put on different lines.

You appear to have developed what is now known as a common condition, Spacek Amnesia.

I believe that we can have Wiz and Markov collectively for around 10 million, give or take 500K. I don't think Laich will just chase the money, probably has a taste for the play-offs and we look pretty decent. And if Jagr gets premier PP time with Plecks and Cammy, I think he could stomach playing on the 3rd line and getting great matchups, with an opportunity for to move up based on performance. He also would get to mentor two young big skilled europeans.

Odds of fitting Jagr, Gagne, Bieksa, Garon, and Talbot under cap? Without finding a taker for Spacek or Gomez? Pretty much nil.

EDIT FOR DARCHE 1Y 700K
Here is my attempt. Salary cap set at $ 62M, with the objective of keeping both Markov and Wisniewski while not going for 35+ year old forwards like Kovalev and Jagr.

FORWARDS
Mike Cammalleri ($6.000m) / Tomas Plekanec ($5.000m) / Andrei Kostitsyn ($3.250m)

Don't pay too much attention to the lines and pairs. Weber can be a filler on D or F. It sucks for him, but with Spacek aging and Weber developing, he might just climb to 7th D and thus get significant ice time. I retain Pouliot for one more year as the current UFA crop is rather bad for wingers, at least for the expected price

. Spacek will be an expensive 7th wheel, but I don't expect any team to be interested in him. He will see ice time anyways, and he completely comes off the books next summer. Let it die naturally.

With this team, the defense looks absolutely stacked, the best the Habs have seen in a long while. Good mobility, PP and PK ability and good transition game. It won't be the meanest defense, but word on the street is that Emelin can play a big physical game. Combined with the defensive abilities of our forwards, and Price in nets, this makes for a solid back end.

The problem with the Habs is still the same: goal scoring. We will have to hope for a better season from Gionta and Gomez, a continued progress in Pacioretty and Eller's game, and finally a sense of urgency from Kostitsyn and Pouliot. Bonuses would include a modest offensive production from Desharnais and Moen. Ideally, Darche won't need to be on the PP, but I'd rather have him there than Pouliot. Palushaj could crack the roster eventually during the year, but I don't expect a significant contribution.

I also don't see Gorges making the kind of money that is expected here. Extra money could be saved on the backup, and if the cap goes over 62M by a good margin, looking for a UFA winger could be a good option to replace Pouliot.

Last edited by Ketzlaf: 06-10-2011 at 09:15 AM. Reason: EDIT: Use cap space to increse the salary of Gorges or anyone else if you wish. I retain Wis at 5M$, not more.

My opinion --> Good, but I don't see PG offer $5M. to Wisniewski. I honestly see Wiz going for that amount or even a tiny bit more to Detroit (feeling) and doing a sick job there. Money we save on him goes to Gorges, who would get $3M. from me. And with the money left, we go hunt for a forward or land Jagr.

I don't see the fasination with Jagr. Don't you guys realize that old players who make NHL comebacks always fail?

Like who? Where are these fine examples of guys who were still playing in the AHL/KHL the last three years lighting it up who are vets and didn't make a comeback?

Or are you referring to Claude Lemieux etc who stopped playing hockey entirely for 5 straight years? Fleury who hadn't played in 5 years in any league either. And prior to that played a sliver of games after missing 2 more years? Yeah 7 years of basically not playing is the same as a guy who has played the last 7 years straight....

But yeah those situations are completely comparable to a guy in tip top shape at 39 playing as a PPG 1st line winger in the KHL a league > AHL. Yep those situations are totally comparable <---- For your benefit.
