What Should The Rangers Do Before October 7th?

We've all heard the speculation and Brooks articles about Richards. We've heard Brooks state that Paul Stastny, Patrick Sharp, and Stephen Weiss could be plan B's.

I think the best thing for the Rangers to do is to sign Brad Richards and then make a trade at the deadline or before the season for a winger.

The other Brad Richards threads are too jam packed and I'd like to create this thread to throw off-season thoughts and keep it on topic. (They are currently arguing over Dubinsky in a Brad Richards thread, my case and point)

What do you guys think the Rangers should do?

Sign Richards, trade for someone that isn't Sharp, as it isn't realistic to expect Chicago to trade him, unless it's for an upgrade -- they'll almost certainly be in the playoffs @ trade deadline time, when Sharp would be moved, if they wanted to move him -- which, unless he completely falls apart, they don't.

Actually, sign Richards, and sign Andrew Brunette.

Well Chicago being in the playoffs by the trade deadline isn't a lock IMO. They barely squeezed into the playoffs this year and it will depend on whether Corey Crawford can keep it up and show that it wasn't a fluke season for him. They lost a lot of key guys after they won the Cup and it affected them a lot

Sign Richards and someone like JJ. If not, sign Richards and let Wolski try to fit in the top 6 and if he can't trade for a LWer.

The option that will make the team better and without giving up any assets or roster players.

Sign RICHARDS. Nothing else. No trades. Ok well maybe JJ if we can get him for cheap, but that won't happen.

It's simple for me. Sign Richards and that's it. Keep playing kids from there.

I like Henrik and Biron in net

I'm exited about the young D. Staal, Girardi,McDonaugh , Sauer and let Erixon, Del Zotto, Valentenko battle it out in camp. I am cool with a vet signed to a two way deal

at C go with Richards, Anisimov, Stepan, Boyle. I would not be apposed to signing a vet like Madden as a 4th line C and move Boyle up to LW

RW, Gaborik, Callahan, Zuccarello, Prust
LW Dubinsky, Wolski, Avery, one of Grachev/Hagelin

That's a good lineup and the only addition needed is a top C . Trading for a a guy like Weiss, Spezza, Stastny would mean losing some of the young talent up coming

What's the point of signing Richards if we won't have Gaborik on his wing?

Gaborik was painful to watch last year so I dont see how removing him equates to tanking. And no I'm not interested in how many points he had and what it projects to over 82. The guy refuses to engage in any puck battles.

The guy is a mercenary. Haven't had an ounce of attachment towards him since he signed.

1.)Sign Richards

2.) Retain all RFA's to as reasonable of salaries as possible

3.) Bring back Feds and Prospal for no more than $1M each. If they want more let them walk.

4.) Use our glut of defensive prospects to either trade for the Oiler's first overall OR ever better, trade for their 2012 1st round pick as they're a good candidate to finish dead last again, and next year is a significantly stronger draft.

5.) If the cap allows it, keep Wolski. Buy out Drury (which they're going to, thank God) and Avery.

6.) Draft the best available FORWARD in the first round!!!!!!!!!

Just curious, is Sharp really even available or is this just some sort of pipe dream? I haven't heard a word about him being realistically available.

1. Buyout/Trade Drury/Wolski
2. Resign our RFAs affordably
3. Keep Prospal and Fedotenko cheaply
4. Sign Richards
5. Trade for a 30g 60 pt LW
6. Sign a PP shot on RD to a reasonable contract
7. Make Cally Captain
8. Fire Sather
9. Host a cigar party

Sign Richards to a reasonable contract, not too long with not too hefty a cap hit or stay the course. Anyone that says the team (without making too big a splash in free agency last July 1st) didn't make huge strides in terms of development and finding success during the regular season playing their brand of hockey is just being silly.

I'd like to think Slats has turned over a new leaf (pardon the cliché) and has realized the importance and necessity in building from within. We may not have a defacto #1C, but both Artie and Step are special players and who's to say Artie doesn't double his production from last season or Step doesn't play lights out hockey next season?

Worse comes to worse in the scenario that we don't land Richards and no viable "Plan B" (in the form of a free agent signing or trade) comes to fruition, the kids get more ice time and we have a better idea of what we're working with and it gives Sather a little more time to work some magic over the phone.

1) Buyout Drury, but not Wolski or Avery

2) Re-sign RFAs (except Gilroy)

3) Sign Richards ($7m cap hit or less, up to 7 years)

4) Keep Prospal or Fedotenko (hopefully in a wink-wink deal where that player remains "un-signed" until training camp, but is promised the contract now to give us even more summer cap space)

If Prospal is the UFA LW that returns:
Prospal - Richards - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Anisimov - Callahan
Wolski - Stepan - Zuccarello
Avery - Boyle - Prust
Weise or Christensen (should try to trade Christensen at the draft for a late pick)

If Fedotenko is the UFA LW that returns:
Dubinsky - Richards - Gaborik
Wolski - Anisimov - Callahan
Fedotenko - Stepan - Zuccarello
Avery - Boyle - Prust
Weise or Christensen (should try to trade Christensen at the draft for a late pick)

Defensively, Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, and Sauer are locks. Erixon also looks like a lock based upon recent comments. Del Zotto and Valentenko will also compete for a spot in camp, with the possibility of Kundratek surprising or Eminger coming back at a <$1m cap hit to fill the #6-#7 d role.

I'd be interested to see how many people say sign Prospal or Fedotenko and how many say let a kid like Hagelin or Grachev battle it out for a spot?

I am for the kids. I think Feds and Vinny but they need to save every penny on the cap and continue to get younger.

thoughts?

-Buyout Drury

-Draft a forward

-Sign Richards

-Resign all RFA's

-Kick the tires on some UFA puck-moving defensemen, and LW'ers

-Resign Prospal and Fedotenko to cheap 1 year deals. Let some kids challenge them in camp.

-If we sign the aforementioned D-man or LW, buyout Avery and/or Wolski.

Most likely lineup:

Prospal-Richards-Gaborik
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan
Fedotenko-Stepan-MZA
Avery-Boyle-Prust

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
Erixon/MDZ/Valentenko/etc - UFA d-man.

I don't think Prospal or Fedotenko will be that expensive. I was thinking between $1-1.5m.

I'm also not confident enough in Grachev or Hagelin to pencil them into the opening night lineup at this point, and I am almost certain we will have at least 1 significant forward injury this season. When that occurs, if Hagelin/Grachev are the best forward in the AHL, they will get their shot.

If they really do surprise out of camp and force their way into the starting lineup on opening night, then you can bump Fedotenko/Avery to the extra forward spot.

I dont understand why its one or the other. Sign them both to cheap 1 year deals, and let the kids battle them in camp.

Do you think Evgeny Grachev deserves to go into camp knowing its his roster spot to lose?

Gotta hedge your bets in this situation.

If you re-sign both Prospal and Fedotenko, and don't buyout Wolski or Avery, then you have 5 LWs that are basically locks for starting the season in the NHL on top of Grachev/Hagelin, etc.

Too much of a logjam for my liking, which is why I'd advocate the return of Prospal or Fedotenko, but not both.

EDIT: Of course, if Prospal would come back for ~$1m, I wouldn't be opposed to using him as the extra forward until late in the regular season to keep him fresh. In that case, move Christensen/Weise to the AHL.

I see the point and it's not a bad thing to have both Grachev and Hagelin in Hartford to start the year I just think of one of Prospal or Fedotenko comes back they are guaranteed in the minors.

I read somewhere Konopka may not be brought back by the Isles. How much could he get as a UFA?

Another thought is sign a 4th line C like Konopka or a Madden and slide Boyle to LW
