I think we win the cup with a line-up like that !

Oh yeah... I forgot... Our best player ! 10 million dollar in cap space !
wow this is terrible, proabably the worst lines you could come up with!!! Did you actually take time to think or just picked up the names out of cereal bowl because these lines are horrible.
Again this is just pathetic!!!

The cap-acrobatics required for this would mean that gomez being sent down in my opinion.
Not exactly. All you need is to not be piss-poor at math and see that there's quite enough space to sign both, even with Price and Subban contract upgrades coming up next year.

It would be nice to see the Habs get some return on the players that they aren't keeping, whether its in the form of draft picks or prospects.

you know....Financially it doesn't make sense, but on paper..

Markov-Emelin
Wiz-Subban
Gill-Gorges
Spacek

now if we could offload Spacek somehow, we would have a huge amount of cap flexibility.

Its an intriguing concept.

It does make sense. IMO Wiz/Markov >Erhoff/Bieksa. I'd much rather have Mara for a #7 than Spacek, just for his toughness and character, and he's pretty solid in his own end.If PG could unload Spacek AND Gomez,he should win executive of the year

I'd be willing to throw in a 4th or a guy like Carle to dump Spacek's salary if we could sign Wisniewski at about 4.75-5 mil cap hit. I think down the road we could move him and get 4 times that back once Weber/Diaz can step in and play his role.

Yes We can Resign Wiz if we Want, but I think this Team needs another top 6 forward far more than another Dman. I think PG is trying to go pretty cheap on the back end this year and hope guys like Emelin and Weber can progress quickly this year And keep open about 5 million to spend on a forward. Probably will shell out 4.5 If Laich hits the market.

The pick and/or prospect may have to be better.

Dumping Spacek(though it may not be possible) would allow us to have about 9 mil to possibly re-sign Wiz(or a UFA d-man) plus a UFA forward. At this point we probably can't afford both Wiz and Laich(or comparable UFA).

At that point you'd have to think long and hard about it. Obviously if we have to add our 2011 1st or 2012 1st to dump Spacek(who's cap hit is gone in 12 months) that would be too much long term loss for short term gain.

Say team X offered to take Spacek and our 3rd for a low end prospect(dumping a contract)...the debate would be, what can we get with that 4 mil of cap room...if we can re-sign Wisniewski at 4.5/year it's a no brainer for 3-4 years....or if we could sign Brewer for 3-4 years at 3.6-3.75/year.

Another option is taking a contract that can be buried in the minors...Commodore? Reinprecht?

For some reason, I think Wiz takes less than market value to stay...maybe a 4 yr deal with a 3.8 cap hit...wishful thinking?

Pierre Gauthier: A busy off-season

Pierre Gauthier: A busy off-season

The General Manager’s position is restless. At this time of the season, when the team is not in the playoffs, players’ evaluations are done and GMs know who they want to keep and who they will let go.

Two years ago, we saw Bob Gainey complete a major clean-up and bring some much needed new blood in the dressing room in desperate need of change after the disastrous centennial season.

Pierre Gauthier has started his shopping by finally signing Alexei Yemelin and agreeing to terms on a contract with Swiss UFA Raphael Diaz, two defensemen. Gauthier, who only had two defensemen under contract for next year in Spacek and Subban, was not done when he signed veteran Hal Gill to another one year deal. Gill had a great influence on young stars PK Subban and Carey Price amongst others and he will continue in that role. Some say that Gauthier is negotiating with Andrei Markov, a delicate negotiation if we consider his recent serious injuries. There is also RFA Josh Gorges who is due for a substantial raise this summer, as well as fellow RFAs Yannick Weber and Alexandre Picard. Roman Hamrlik, James Wisniewski, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara, who have all helped at the blue line last year, are all UFA this summer.

I like your article

As a follow up, here is a small part my perspective...One area that should be viewed as high priority is even strength offensive production, of course without any adverse negative effects to the defensive output.

Thank you and I agree. As far as offensive output goes though, I'm seriously questioning how much is player-personnel and how much is coaching/system.

The best example is Alain Vigneault, who was a defensive coach for the longest time until Canucks' GM Mike Gillis told him that if he wanted to keep his job, he needed to give his players more freedom offensively. To Vigneault's credit, he adapted and started activating his defensemen, and Gillis provided him with mobile defensemen to address that style.

Can Martin and Gauthier do that? Of course they can. Are they willing to do it? It remains to be seen.

The difference too was having a pretty stacked defence. The Vancouver forwards didn t have to hold back so they could help the defence out. If PG does a good job shaping our defence, the forwards will be able to concentrate a little more on offence and be more productive.

Keep in mind that Bill Daly has said that the CAP could be 63.5 million this season, so I'm going with that.

1st order of business......trade Gomez!!!

We have to bite the bullet and overpay to rid ourselves of that contract

To Florida: Scott Gomez, Benoit Pouliot, 2011 1st round pick

To Habs: Stephen Weiss, 4th round pick

Next trade....bye bye Spacek

To Columbus: Jaroslav Spacek, Florida 4th round pick

To Habs: Columbus 7th round pick

That saves us about 8 million in CAP space, and here's what I'd do with the money.

Brooks Laich: 4 years/18m (4.5m hit)
Tomas Kopecky: 3 years/8.4m (2.8m hit)
Jan Hejda: 4 years/12m (3m hit)

FORWARDS
Mike Cammalleri ($6.000m) / Tomas Plekanec ($5.000m) / Brooks Laich ($4.500m)

Tomas Kopecky ($2.800m) / Lars Eller ($1.270m) / Andrei Kostitsyn ($3.250m)

Price: 6 years/30m (5m hit)

Its a tight squeeze but it is manageable with a 23 man roster. If its goes up to 63.5 though it can easily be done (raising Wiz contract to 5 and Laich to 4.5)

One thing people often forget about Markov is that he's asking for a multi-year contract. With his present situation, he and his agent probably know they'll have to conceed to a lower cap if he wants many years. IMO, Markov will get what he wants, a long contract, but he'll be signed at a lower cap hit, closer to 5 mil.

what about the possibility of Jovocop instead of Wiz. He may be a better fit considering what we presently or should have( Markov n Gorges). Don t think he will be returning to Phoenix. Don t know what he would be looking for salary as there hasn t been much discussion about him. What do you think?

Gautier is building his team early with cheap players that can be good. If either Yemelin or Diaz don't pan out as top 7 defense men, they can be taken off the roster with their salaries stripped off the cap. I'm not sure about Diaz, but I am confident Yemelin will be good this season if he is given a chance. He's one of the KHL's best defense men and what sets him apart from other defense men from Russia is his physical game. He will not get intimidated by the NHL hits.

I'm glad to see Gautier sing low risk high reward players as early as he can to be able to know how much cash is available come July 1st to see who they can sign...

BTW, I don't mind if the Habs wait a season to sign a free agent if there is a better offer next summer. I like Brad Richards. I'd be happy to see the Habs sign him.. But if they can't afford to fit him under the cap, I'd rather they save the long term contact to an impact player next season then to sign someone long term just to say they signed someone...

To Habs: Stephen Weiss, 4th round pick
Weiss has a no move clause. And I doubt adding $5million at one position in salary over the next two years in return for a sideways move at centre, a falling over winger and a mid-1st draft pick is high on Florida's wish list either.

Btw, for the people vanishing Spacek's contract, irrc, he also has some form of limited NTC, does anyone actually know the specifics of that?
