Matt D'Agostini/Defenseman to the Blues

The Blues top priority this offseason is probably to acquire a quality top 4 defenseman, ideally someone who is best in the defensive zone. While there are a few decent options on the free agent market, the Blues are a team without a stable ownership and I think we will be priced out of the running for the top 7-8 defensemen that will reach free agency (Bieksa, Ehrhoff, Brewer, White, Kaberle, Wiz, Babchuk, even Jovo). More likely the Blues will trade one (or more) of the players currently on the roster (potentially along with picks/prospects) for what they are looking for to offset some of the incoming salary.

The Blues roster, though, has a lot of players that are probably not going to be moved. Backes, Petro, Stewart and Berglund are likely untouchables at this point and McDonald (big contract), Steen (leader), Shattenkirk (d for d doesnt help us), Jackman (same as Shatty), Polak (same as Shatty; just got a new contract) and Perron (head injury leaves him in limbo) as highly unlikely to be moving. Oshie's name has been rumored in trade talks recently. While he may not be viewed as an untouchable asset like he has in the past, I still also seriously doubt he is going anywhere. So after all of this, it leaves us with a few names

Matt D'Agostini
Vladimir Sobotka
Carlo Colaiacavo
Nikita Nikitin

Out of these few names, I have to think D'Agostini has the highest value of the bunch. Set to be a RFA, D'Agostini is coming off of his best NHL season to date, scoring 21 goals and 25 assists. Most Blues fans expect him to sign a 1-2 year deal for 1.5-2 mil/year. He had a solid rookie season with Montreal in 08-09 and a horrendous sophomore slump in 09-10 and was almost an after thought heading into the season. I think its also worth noting that he was a pretty solid scorer in the AHL from the get go. His two biggest strengths are undoubtedly his speed and his shot. Along with D'Agostini, the Blues could add Colaiacovo, Nitkitin, 3 2nd round (including #32) picks, 2 3rd round picks, or even Ian Cole.

The teams I think who would be interested would be
Pittsburgh- Up against the cap, could move Michalek (LNTC) (I assume Orpik/Letang untouchable, and Martin is unlikely to move) and save a few mil in cap space, D'Agostini would be perfect for Malkin/Crosby's right side.
Philly- Also up against the cap and could move Coburn/Carle/Mez to save a bit of cash
Calgary-Also against the cap, Regehr would be the ideal player. Is Calgary still committed to trying to compete and not rebuild?
Washington-Arnott, Laich are UFAs and Alzner, Varlamov are RFAs with limited cap space to sign them all. They have a lot of defense and could probably use some offensive depth

Just my thoughts, would like to get the opinion of some of these teams. These four teams have two things in common, cap problems and subpar prospects pools. I think the combination of a cheap offensive forward in D'Agostini and some combination of picks/prospects I could see some deal getting done here

Pittsburgh has no cap issues and no one in the top 4 is moving.

Michalek isn't going anywhere, let alone for a package where a guy who had Tyler Kennedy's statline last year is the biggest piece coming back.

Non-starter.

In fact, I can't see any scenario where you'd get a cost-effective top 4 dman for a one-year wonder like D'Agostini.

While I disagree with your opinion of Dags a a "one-year wonder", I do not disagree with your assessment of this proposal. The only way a deal with Dags would get a legit top 4 would be if it did actuallly include Cole and a 2nd or two. Even then, Im not sure it would be enough for someone like Regehr.

I should add that I don't mean to say D'Agostini absolutely won't match last year's numbers, only that it was by far his best and a relatively small sample size to count on when measured against a player with Michalek's track record.

The Blues need a LEFT HANDED defenseman that can play about 20 minutes a night. I'm, personally, not willing to offer what it takes to get a top 2 defenseman, so I'd be looking at #3-4 guys. Basically, a guy like Gleason would be my #1 choice.

The other need the Blues have is a face-off winning, penalty-killing, 3rd line center. Belanger is perfect, but I don't know if the Blues can get him through free agency.

To get the top 4 LH dman that we want we are going to have to give up more than what you listed. Sobotka, Carlo, and Nikitin won't get us much and D'Agostini would be a smaller piece in a bigger deal.

If we want to get a big time dman, we are going to have to trade Cole or McRae at a minimum along with a 2nd

You won't get a top 4 dman for a 3rd line right winger.
