(Post #54) Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park, Monday, Jan. 2 at 1 p.m. vs. NYR

Below is the original story I wrote. Another item of note us that if the Rangers pull out of the Winter Classic, I've been told the frontrunner to replace them is Chicago, who have a trip East planned at the turn of the calendar and on a preliminary schedule are due to stop in Philly Jan. 5.

Here's another interesting note:

According to an NHL source, the New York Rangers may not be the Flyers opponent for the Winter Classic after all.

The game, slated for Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park, hasn't been formally announced by the league yet. That's because the Rangers are allegedly waffling about whether they want to participate in the game or not.

...

However, the Rangers are up in the air about the game, allegedly because they are already taking part in games in Europe to start the season and adding the Winter Classic to that hectic schedule could be too much of a distraction (Especially with HBO cameras around... um... 24/7).

Flyers/Blackhawks would still bring the hate. As long as the Flyers are hosting, I don't really care who we're playing, although Rangers would probably be ideal.

Guys, I'm a Hawks fan in peace.

I went to Citizens Bank Park in 2009 to see the Cubs. It's honestly the nicest modern day ballpark I've ever been to. I would absolutely travel to see a game there since I'll be on winter break.

Here's to a Flyers/Blackhawks Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park.

Hell no, Chicago had theirs already. I really wanted NYR because I wanted to see Torts in action. At least we'll see Pronger trolling his locker room though.

When you think about it, if Chicago's in it, Philadelphia and Chicago would each have participated in two Winter Classics. Each would have participated as both a home and an away team.

This.

Flyers vs. Chicago bores me.

Rangers, Devils, or let's just play the Phantoms. I'd be far more interested in playing our AHL team in the Winter Classic than a non-rival.

I'd also accept Montreal.

The way it's reading, it would only be them because they are already going to be around. Imagine if the choices were worse.

If they do that in the future, someone could host a sun belt team. Well, I'll come in your forum again if we face you on January 2nd.

The NHL will go back to only one outdoor game next season.

Sources told ESPN.com on Saturday that the Heritage Classic in Canada, which made its debut in Calgary in February, won't be staged next season.

The source said the Heritage may return for the 2012-13 season, but at the very least will skip next season.

The Winter Classic remains as the only outdoor game for next season. It's expected to be held in Philadelphia although the NHL hasn't made that official yet.

I'd like to see it be the Kings; that team needs more exposure.

Detroit would be cool, and they haven't gotten a winter classic yet, so at least one team would be new to it. It is just really a shame that more team aren't going to be given an opportunity to take part in this. It's cool the Flyers are hosting and that proposed jersey looks awesome, but I don't see what would be wrong with a team like LA hosting it. They are young, exciting, and in a very large market.

Detroit has been in a Winter Classic. They played the Hawks at Wrigley.

Detroit and Chicago actually played in the second one.

EDIT: JVR21 beat me to it!

LA hosting? There are a multitude of issues, starting with outdoor ice and ending with the fact that the game would have to start at 10:00 am to hit NBC's prime time of 1:00 pm EST.

Forgot Detroit had been in before.

From what I've heard outdoor ice is fine in the heat, its rain/snow that really ruin it, and they can start it 4:00PM EST, like the late day football games. LA doesn't necessarily have to host it, but I think they'd be a great team to be a part of it.

Detroit? Really? What kind of a joke rivalry is that?

And I know we played Chicago in the finals, but seriously I really don't hate them, let alone consider them a rival.

The only storyline HBO would have is that they beat us in the Finals...I really don't feel like taking a trip down memory lane...

I can see the Rangers reasoning, Devils would be best.. Boston perhaps?
