Part of the reason I don't want to trade Carter.

Definitely some assumptions on contracts:

Trade: Carle for picks-prospects
Resigned: Nodl, Powe, Bryz
UFAs signed: Miller, Madden, Janssen, Sopel, Ericsson

Miller and Ericsson might have loyalties to DET.

FORWARDS
Daniel Briere ($6.500m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Kris Versteeg ($3.083m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Blair Betts ($0.700m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.950m)
Drew Miller ($0.950m) / John Madden ($1.000m) / Darroll Powe ($0.825m)

As of right now, there's no bonus cushion.

go to capgeek.com and at the top there's a tab that says "calculators". click on that, and then click "2011-2012 cap calculator", then go to the drop box after the page loads and click on "PHI"

how does this seem guys?

here are my moves that i'm suggesting.
1. sign Byrzgalov for 6 years/33 million, for a cap hit of $5,500,000
2. Waive Leighton, Shelley and Betts
3. Trade Versteeg and Carle for Picks/Prospects
4. Sign Marty Reasoner for a cap hit of 1,300,000
5. Sign Raffi Torres for a cap hit of $1,500,000
6. Sign Eric Belanger for a cap hit of $1,000,000
7. Sign Jan Hejda for a cap hit of $2,500,000
8. Resign Powe and Nodl
9. Promote Ben Holmstrom to play on the 4th line

We'd be looking at something like this

FORWARDS
James Van Riemsdyk ($1.654m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Mike Richards ($5.750m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m)
Raffi Torres ($1.750m) / Marty Reasoner ($1.300m) / Andreas Nodl ($0.800m)
Darroll Powe ($0.800m) / Eric Belanger ($1.000m) / Ben Holmstrom ($0.750m)

DEFENSEMEN
Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m) / Chris Pronger ($4.921m)
Braydon Coburn ($3.200m) / Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Jan Hejda ($2.500m)

Assuming a $62.4M Cap and a Bonus Cushion... Lappy being able to be placed on LTIR by the NHL, and Carle being able to be moved for picks/prospects... Walker, Leighton, Shelley being waived (Walker already done IIRC)... RFAs either signed on the cheap, or released/rights traded... O'Donnell talked into staying another season at a Home Team Discount.

I've been able to keep the Core in place with the main loss being Carle... and Leino not signed, UNLESS Versteeg can be moved for picks/prospects also and Leino signed for around his numbers.

Granted the depth is gone with only seven top nine forwards and five reliable veteran D-men... But the farmhands are given a chance to prove heir worth and the goaltending is solid... and the core is still there.

There is a full 23 man roster BUT little wiggle room under the Cap... and hopefully the System can be better restocked... although Comcast would have to accept eating some NHL dollars buried in the AHL and a few players will have to be buried there if no one will take them on waivers or cheap trade.

hmm. how do you suggest that they make it through the entire season with $43,901 of cap space?
not a good enough roster to be using literally every inch of the cap. Jason Strudwick? Tomas Kopecky?

First of all, my salary cap is only 62 million compared to a few others on here who have the salary cap at 62.5 or 63 million and even then, almost everyone goes over that amount or adds a bonus cushion in theirs, where my roster doesn't have any of that.

Next, I think Jason Strudwick and Tomas Kopecky will make fine roster additions while allowing us to keep our star players. In fact, I think Kopecky can take the place of Leino without us losing a lot, plus it saves us money, and Strudwick is just a replacement for O'Donnell at half the price.

Finally, my roster has a full 23 man roster and is a little more realistic. It may not be the best roster or even one I would like to see on the ice, but it's something that can/could actually happen.

i attached an excel spreadsheet i made at work cus i was bored. im up in the air with coburn and carle. but id trade hartnell and coburn for picks/prospects, etc. would rather not trade hartnell but hes 4.2 mill. i wanted to give zherdev and steeg another shot/year. if they dont pan out, trade them. im "hoping" leino signs under 3 million.. who knows. i just dont want to lose a bunch of offense for a goalie.

I really like this.

Trade Carle for picks/prospects.
Trade Versteeg for picks/prospects.

Both these trades re-stock our minors a bit.

Now, let Leino and Carcillo walk.

Sign FA D for $1 to 1.2 million.
Sign FA W for $2 to $2.25 million.

Call up Rinaldo and Wellwood.

Bryzgalov taking less and replacing Shelley with a slightly cheap guy would save cap space.

Both these trades re-stock our minors a bit.

Now, let Leino and Carcillo walk.

Sign FA D for $1 to 1.2 million.
Sign FA W for $2 to $2.25 million.

Call up Rinaldo and Wellwood.

Bryzgalov taking less and replacing Shelley with a slightly cheap guy would save cap space.

cole had a cap hit of 2.9 this past season. Coming off a bounce back season, i don't think you get him for less than 3-3.5

This is my second try ever at using capgeek and trying to understand this stuff.... I know this roster will suck, so don't hold back you criticism. What don't I understand?

You have the salary cap set at 59.4
The cap will rise, likely to around 62.4. Gives you some more cash to play around with.

A man can dream. Either way, insert FA worth roughly $2 mill.

no i understand. i too, would love to have cole on this team. sadly, i don't see a way we could swing that, unless we opt out on signing bryz and get vokoun for 4 mill or so.

Hey all. Long time lurker, first time poster so please be gentle. The "video game gm" stuff is fun, so I thought I'd throw mine into the mix.

This situation depends on Carter being moved for Voracek. I'd LOVE to see Larose brought in. The thought of him, Richards, and Versteeg on the same line seems like the perfect balance to me. Adding another young gun to the Giroux/JVR combo is exciting, and giving Wellwood the opportunity to step up and play with two very good vets is intriguing. I brought in Konopka to help with defensive zone draws and the toughness you need to endure the 82 game grind. He's also very intelligible and good with teammates and the media.

Carle is gone and O'Donnell brought back. Even if you keep Carle and let O'Donnell walk, I still feel you have to bring in another vet since Pronger will miss the start of the season and will need relief of those big minutes throughout the season like last year. I'm platooning Montador and Gustafsson in this scenario.

I also went a little outside the box and put Sestito as earning a spot in training camp, although you could sub in Rinaldo/Holmstrom/whoever. In an ideal world, I'd get rid of Shelley altogether and platoon a Winchester/Rinaldo type duo.
