I said they dont/wont make an official press release about NOT SIGNING A PROSPECT - I've yet to see one here.
Gordie Clark publicly stated they won't be signing him this summer, he will be going back to BC, and they support his decision.
It was in the paper.
That's official enough for me.
This isn't like the Erixon situation where they'll lose his rights if he doesn't sign this summer. And its so he can get his college degree. It's not like a European player refusing to come over seas. So it's not an embarrassing situation for the organization.
Hopefully he gets a lot of course work done this summer and he doesn't feel he needs to go back for his senior year. Hopefully he gets his degree sometime next summer and this won't be an issue.
Will they even release that information? Or will it be some kind of off limits thing to media and outsiders?
Thus far, it has been off-limits. For the first time this season, Ottawa has invited the media to come watch. But most teams are really quiet about it. This year particularly since there are so many possibilities at number 15 (perhaps 20 guys, or more). So I don't expect the Rangers to want to tip off other teams as to the five or six players they have called in.
Not true for where Ottawa will draft, because the prospects that could be taken at that spot are pretty well-known.

Thanks again.
It kind of sucks we are kept in the dark about these things. Even though it's for good reason. Still, seeing behind the scenes happenings is interesting. Or if they released that information after the draft.
Wonder if Kreider will actually be able to finish his degree by next year, seems like that might be what he's going for. Wants to finish college before turning pro but wants to accelerate the process.
Also, if he somehow graduated next year, would the Rangers still have an extra year to hold onto his rights or does the clock start ticking and they have to sign him by that August?

College basketball players graduating in 3 years and going pro isn't unheard of. Off the top of my head, I know Emeka Okafor and Jay Williams did it.

I got my B.S. in Chem in three years without summer school...It can be done though you have to load on the hours.
As to the Rangers rights to Kreider, it should fall under 8.6(c)(ii) of the CBA (which BTW, I should keep open on my desktop, I am referring to it so much). If a player becomes a bona fide college student within a year of his being drafted, and then leaves college before his graduating class (which should include graduating early), then the drafting team has his rights until the fourth June 1 after the player is drafted. No offer need be made before then to keep his rights.
We drafted him in the first round the play hockey and he can get his education after his hockey career. People have done it. It's not a matter of education over hockey.

and what's wrong with getting an education now?
also the kid has a say in what he does...just because he was drafted in the first round doesn't mean he has to finish school early..the Rangers own his rights they don't OWN him
