The only way Toronto loses here is if both goalies don't perform well.

EDIT: assuming Gustavsson will still be on the roster.

Gustavsson should still be on the roster as Burke has expressed his hope that he can still prove his worth as an NHL goaltender.

Seems like a good deal for both. Dunno why people think Toronto overpaid...

Only on the Leafs would people claim 1.8 per for a good young goalie is overpaid. That's backup money.

He pretty much became a starter in January. Toronto was already on the outside looking in by that point, actually they were in that position 2 or 3 months before that and it lasted till the end of the season. So is was garbage time cause they were already battling for a spot and had nothing to lose so they started a rookie goalie playing with the 'nothing to lose' mentality and in the end he killed it. Can he do a repeat with actual pressure on him to perform well? Who knows...

...but in all seriousness, no he can't.

So the NHL season now only has meaning prior to January 1st...

ANd battling for a playoff spot is essential a waste of time...

Lol "real pressure"

Every game in Toronto is playing under pressure regardless of position in the standings.

That is about as negative a spin you could put on the kid's year as possible. Could things be different this year ? Of course they could but to call his NHL success garbage time is just letting you name dictate your spin as evidenced by your final conclusion of "no he can't".

However the thread is about the signing so why don't you tell us what the Leafs should have done with his new contract. Should they have told him last years performance was "garbage time and try to lowball him. Or should they have been smart and dealt him seeing his value will never be higher ....might as well get something from some unsuspecting GM who doesn't know the difference between real time and garbage time. Or did the Leafs get burned and pay too much? Come on now tell us Mr.negative because to the rest of us this couldn't have played any other way. A prospect who has been developing nicely gets his chance and does well. He is at the end of his ELC and needs a new contract. The term and money are pretty much in no brainer land. Short of having a crystal ball what else were the Leafs to do?
