Jokerit is first european club to use safer (NHL) rink

http://jokerit.com/index.php?id=1&nid=1379

This is interesting and very welcomed and hopefully more clubs will follow.

- Jokerit is first european club to start using safe NHL styled rink.
- Boards will be 15cm lower
- Plexiglass is more flexible
- And the new rink is easier and faster to build and deconstruct

The new one compared to the old:

The size for the rink will be 30x60 in the SM-Liiga games.

Didn't Finland play with 28x60 rinks?

Yup, but some arenas have 30x60 sized rinks.

This is a great decision by Jokerit and hopefully other teams will follow their example.

Safety improvement is great but personally I'd like Jokerit go back to 28x60 sized rink.

Hartwall Areena has so many different events going during the year (and that's where the Jokerit owner gets good money) so fast building and deconstructing
the rink is also a big improvement.

Why on the Earth SM-liiga team moves to 30m wide rink! Blues, KalPa and Jokerit had 28m wide rinks few years ago and now 30m

Another good move by Kekäläinen, he's using money way more rationally than Virmanen-Harkimo duo used to.

Those boards look pretty low, dunno if that's the case in reality. Maybe using 28x60 rink would've been more sensible?

I think Kekäläinen had big part at this case. Big hand from here to Kekäläinen and Harkimo. Jokerit seems to be very interesting team for the next season.

Probably had something to do with player material more suited to a larger rink? Or team wishes?

No, that is a false impression. Only some teams have played with smaller rinks.

It could happen when they renovate the barn in couple of years.

All the rinks in the league should be the new ones.
And smaller than 30x60

Every SM-liiga team will have NHL style safer rink before 2015.

Just more reasons to like the direction jokerit is going. Kekäläinen also said months ago that we will see lot less of sponsors on the Jokerit jersey next season.
I really hope it works money wise and other teams will follow.

Can't believe they are switched to those damn red plexi glass supports. Makes viewing down the ice awful when you are in the corners.

Really would be an upgrade to have left the plexi without the supports in.

I'll take healthy players over minor obstructed view.

The red supports are dumb as hell. They should use the uncolored ones like most NHL teams use. Those supports look distracting as all hell

True, but wait til you are looking up the ice through those things... as f2d says, they could have come up with something better than bright red.

Then buy your tickets for a different, cause these things look great! And btw, if you claim you cant see the game through those thin pieces of plastic, theres a problem with your attitude.

----

If Jokerit is playing with 30x60 rink, I think its only good for our light and mobile defense. Especially slower teams will be in a lot of trouble in Hartwall Areena.

Maybe the red supports are just for the NHL-match? At least that's way I hope, cause they do look a little annoying.

Attitude problem? Is that really what you mean?

Its my opinion, i have watched hundreds of games behind that style glass down at ice level and its annoying. For sure in Hartwall i will sit above it.

They say it's not red on the other side.

Didn't care to start a new thread, IS Veikkaaja listed rink sizes:

28 x 50 (typo, so it's either 58, 59 tai 60) - Pelicans
28 x 58 - Ässät
29 x 59 - Lukko
28 x 60 - HIFK, Ilves, JYP, Tappara, SaiPa
29 x 60 - Kärpät
30 x 58 - HPK
30 x 60 - Jokerit, KalPa, TPS, Blues

Blues 30 x 60, hmmm. Not sure is that correct. I hate Jokerit going back to 30 x 60 but atm the team is quite suited for that rink size so...

It's been international size for a few years already, of course some media outlets still think it's small..

Due to the lack of size in defense, a big rink suites very well for Jokerit. Having to play the opening home games of the season on an NHL sized rink might suit the opponents more, especially IFK in the opener.
