Goaltending is still a product of the team. When you play a good team and you're goaltending for a crappy team, your numbers are going to reflect that.
Bryzgalov played like 10-day old dog feces in that series. He would have had to play out of his mind to beat Detroit, but he wasn't exactly stellar himself either.

That's why his numbers looked bad... cuz he played bad.

If that's the case Bob is gone, which is sad.

Detroit was going to beat PHX... they didn't necessarily have to beat them the way they did. Absolving Bryzgalov's play because Detroit happens to be very good is just playing into this myth that goalies are rag dolls blowing in the breeze out there.

Niemi, who played like absolute GARBAGE against the Kings, and didn't fair much better against the 'Nucks had a very strong series against the Red Wings... and the Sharks advanced.

Pretty much what a lot of us expected. I really want to know what the internal meetings are like among the Flyers brass.

I'm starting to believe that Bryz won't be a Flyer once the 11/12 season gets underway.

I'm not a fan of having him until he's 38 or 39.

So I guess you wouldn't want Vokoun at a 3 year deal ?

The difference there is that Bob can step in if needed, and we've already seen that Vokoun is still solid. We don't know if Bryz will keep playing as well. Bryz for 7 or 8 years means Bob is gone, and we'd probably just have to start the whole damned carousel over again.

Eh. I guess we'll see.

Point taken, we would just have to hope that they address goalies through drafting etc to prepare for 5 years down the road. We may get the 8 year sub 5 mill cap hit with the idea he walks away during last 2-3 years, who knows. We all love Bob, but the chance that Bob ever gets to Bryz's current abilities is a long shot imo. and we need to solidify the position.

If we get Bryz signed, the goal situation is longer an issue, and that will be

No guarantees but it will be less of an issue than it is now and that is saying a lot given the Flyers soap opera in goal.

Holmgren also will somewhat save his neck....if he lets slip Bryzgalov and if Vokoun is not tenable well he's pretty much back to square 1 and cornered into the status quo. Bob will be a good goaltender but remains to be seen if he really is a legit number 1. Bryzgalov and Vokoun have shown they can carry the load at least...again all about proper risk assessment. Going into another season with Bob and Boosh or another career backup is pretty much crazy talk IMO....just not likely given Snider's marching orders. If anything they'll do some kind of bait and switch (acquire Mason or the like) if they have to otherwise it will be a PR disaster for them...

Has anyone heard any rumors about the contract talks yet? Are they close to a deal? I would love to Bryz under contract long before draft day / free agency.

Any goalie that's going to be a known quantity and someone you're comfortable turning to in 5 years is probably someone that you want to draft this June. Maybe next year but probably not. We'll see what they do at the draft, and even then we won't really know what they have on their hands.

Bob is our shiny new toy and I don't want to lose him. I think it's that fact that has me irrationally hoping they tell Bryz to beat it and sign Vokoun to a nice 3 year deal. Bob wouldn't be an RFA after this deal right, since he was undrafted and would be 24-25 years old...?

Bryzgalov
Bobrovsky
Eriksson
Hovinen

That's realistic. Then you can hope SOMEONE/ANYONE will be around when Bryzgalov retires/finishes up his contract.

Now though...

Bryzgalov
Bobrovsky
--------
Hovinen

You're missing that one piece that made this a credible plan of attack.

I think Bob just got to Philly today, and they are supposed to have some negotiations tomorrow. Presumably the series negotiating hasn't gone down yet

And let's not forget that it could possible end up being:

Hovinen

What's the reason so many people are saying they will wait until Jul 1st to announce the Bryz signing if it gets done before that? Is it strictly to save themselves the conditional pick if he signs before FA starts?

Exactly...

Tell me Holmgren isn't regretting his decision now, though I know he'll never admit it by fixing the mistake by signing Eriksson on July 1st (if Eriksson makes it that far). Even if he leaves Eriksson overseas for this season on loan like he's doing with Hovinen...things would've looked a WHOLE lot better.

This is why you don't give up good prospects for nothing. It ends up biting you in the ass somehow.

Don't you wish we had Maroon as a big, physical possibility in our top 9 this year?

Don't you wish we hadn't alienated Kalinski so he could play center on our 4th line?

Don't you wish we hadn't made Lehtivuori hate life in Glens Falls so that we would have two more legit bottom pairing defensemen to plug in (Gustafsson/Lehtivuori)?

There's four.

If the conditional pick (4th or 5th or 6th?) is even based on that, why does it matter?

A) The pick we would lose is pretty much worthless.
B) We would've traded someone for a higher pick anyway if Bryzgalov signs.)
C) Even if you agree to do this with Bryzgalov, there's still a chance someone blows his mind with an offer on July 1st that makes him walk.
D) You don't want other GMs hating you for being a jerk.

I haven't seen that, but they can't sign him until after the new cap is announced... so they have to wait no matter what.

Very good point.

If we signed Bryzgalov to a seven year deal tomorrow would it count as a 35+ contract? Can someone please clarify?
