What to do with Spacek - Stanely Cup Edition

With the call-up of AHL veteran Nolan Baumgartner to play game 7 of the SCF in place of 4 million dollar defenceman Keith Ballard it seems pretty clear that as long as Vigneault is coach of the Canucks Keith Ballard will not be a part of the team. Obviously Vancouver will be looking to shop him and his value will probably never be lower.
Now, if possible (and I think it is) would you trade Spacek to Vancouver for Ballard straight up?

Spacek:
Veteran Depth
One year left on contract
Reliable if not spectacular, a coaches player
Able to move the puck and play positional defence
Offense has dried up

Ballard:
Four more years at 4.2 million
Has played well in the past
Current coach has zero confidence in him
Able to move the puck and play physical
Huge hipchecking
Offense has dried up but he's young enough to perhaps improve in that aspect

What do you think? Would we have to sweeten the pot with a pick? Would it even be worth the cap space?

No thanks. I like Carey Price's head attached to his shoulders.

I think Vancouver would want to get most of Ballard's salary off the books to re-sign Ehrhoff and Bieksa.

As for our side of the equation, I commend you for wanting to buy low as very few make proposals for reclamation projects, but I'd be very hesitant. It could just be a problem between player and coach, but to have such little confidence in him that he's essentially become a #9 d-man in the Stanley Cup finals... That raises some flags.

I'd just wait out Spacek's contract and take the cap space.

I've mentioned it in the past and I would absolutely do it. Ballard provides an all around presence while having the ability to provide some big hits that would spark the team. No brainer for me. Not a popular choice, but rather ballard at 4.2 than signing some veteran D again for 5+(after spacek's contract is over).

i haven't seen enough of Ballard to comment strongly...

but I would say that a player who has fallen so far out of favour as to be passed up by guys like baumgartner and tanev, likely would be a headache at 4M$+

Spacek, for all his shortcomings, was still getting ice time in the playoffs ahead of weber, mara, sopel...

all that said, Ballard was very good in Phx and Fla (mind you, at one time Mara was quite good in the desert as well), so if i watched enough of his game tapes this year to be utterly convinced the problem was a system/coach one more than anything else, than I might be inclined to consider it.

hard to see VCR wanting to take back Spacek though, especially since his cap hit can't be burried in the minors or retired...

Ballard isn't that bad, he's just not what the Habs or Canucks need. Especially if the Habs re-sign Wisniewski, who is just a better version of Ballard.

Spacek is fine as a bottom pairing dmen and playing on his natural side. Problem is when we get injuries and ask him to play 20 + minutes. Personnaly i dont think he can do it on a regular basis.

Somebody brought up a good idea in the Sorray thread...

Trade Spacek for Souray & 6th rounder & put Souray in Hamilton..

I think that would be good for both teams

We can than sign Wiz!

True, but since his last (major) injury he doesnt look like that guy anymore, not often enough to be worth 4.2M IMO.

Because I'm sure Molson would want to want to pay millions to a player in the minors when the other guy is one year away to be off the books.

Ballard lacks poise. He has all the tools. I feel like his decision making is too slow for the skill and talent he has.

No Shanks our D is basically already set ( Assuming we resign our RFA and UFAs ) And i dont want another bad contract on the Habs. We have enough with Gomez. Dont go Add Ballard. Ride out Spacegoat and ship him to Columbus for a Pick.

Surely the Habs can do better thsn commit themselves to Ballard's contract. They've already rummaged through Picard, Mara, and Sopel at the flea market. I don't even like his name. It reminds me of Harold Ballard.

The best is they traded..
Bernier, Grabner and a 1st (which would have been Tinordi) all for Ballard and Oreskovitch (spellling?)

WOW!

Because ballard is that good. He reminds me of Niklas Kronwall but less offensively gifted.

I think PG knows that he can trade Spacek at some point. Its just a question of time and the right situation to present itself. Whether its after the season starts or before. There will be an opportunity after the UFA starts, there always seems a team that's left out when all the big name free agents are signed. Maybe then Spacek can be moved.

I say get rid of Spacek so we can sign Wiz. Even if we have to add a draft pick or lower rated prospect as an inticement. $3.8 M is most of what Wiz would ask for anyways and he's far more useful than Spacek.
