What is Luongo worth in the open market?

6mill? 6.5? 5? I don't think he should be making Khabibulin money yet. Luongo is not greedy or stupid. He likely feels that he is under appreciated. In essence, he didn't really reject a 5 Mil/year offer. Instead, He effectively rejected a long term deal with the Florida Panthers. You know, the team that embarrassed him by making him the first player to be taken to arbitration by his team despite the career numbers that he posted in his last NHL season.
He simply wants to be gone from an organization (thanks Iron Mike) that has treated him like ****!! Even if they offered him the same contract that Khabibulin just signed I would guess that he would've told them where to shove it.

But Going from his quotes on tsn, it sounds like he wanted to remain a cat for at least couple more years. Whats the deal? Some cover up?

"If the price would have been right I would have agreed to a five-year deal," Luongo told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel after the hearing. "That was the bottom line. In the end they didn't want to take the extra step."

Khabibulin got massivly overpaid, but that is beside the point. I would say around 5.5 to 6.

Luongo without doubt will be traded before the year is over. Who ever gets him though will be paying a premium for the trade and a premium for his contract extension.

I say 5M. And maybe a bit higher if he can prove himself in the playoffs.

in the "open market" meaning no cap? i'd say 6-7 million.

in the new nhl he should be paid around 4-5 IMO.

I would say Florida offered him a fair deal(i would pay him 4,4.5,5,5.5,6 over 5 years).

If he was a UFA i would ofer him .5-1 million more per season.

Without doubt? Florida will have two more years to work out an extension with Luongo.

I predict he'll be a cat until his early 30s.

If Luongo was an UFA tomorrow, he would be worth more than any other goalie. IMO he's worth the cap if a guy like Hossa is worth $6 million/year. I'd much rather build around Luongo than Hossa and if you could add a guy of Luongo's caliber without giving up anything off your current roster...you definitely cough up CAP money to do so...providing he's willing to sign for 3-5 years.

Completely agree.

Luongo is a "franchise" player if I've ever seen one.
