What do we have to do to contend for the cup next season?

What do we have to do to contend for the cup next season? It seems like Boston had a very hard time against us and if we had one, we would of played Washington and then Tampa Bay (two teams that we have and can beat!). We have goaltending, a decent defensive core once Markov and Gorges are signed, as well as some young players like Pacioretty and Desharnais showing skill and the ability to play in the NHL.

So going forward, how do we improve our team and contend for the cup next season?

Cammalleri - Plekanec - ?????
Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Kostitsyn - Eller - ?????
White -????? - Moen
Desharnais

Markov - Subban
Gill - Gorges
????? - Yemelin
Spacek

Price
?????

FYI: I left Pouliot out because I feel that he is done in Montreal

I want to contend and think that with Price, Subban and Pacioretty along with Leblanc, Kristo, Tinordi and even Yemelin up and coming, we are in good hands for the next 5 to 7 years (hopefully!).

So, what do we do to contend for the Stanley Cup next season?

A good top 6 forward...and maybe a bit more depth. BTW, you forgot Darche in your line-up. He's a warrior...he'll be on the team.

But yeah, what we see right now is pretty much what we'll get for next season. It's alright though since we gave a run the the Bruins.

But we really need a good winger who is more consistent to play with Pleks and Cammy. Of course, if that player can have size, it would be great.

We also need a good second line centre. It could be Gomez if he could finaly play like he can. That's who we'll have next season so we have to cross our fingers...

But we have a great group in place. A few touch up here and there, and more experience for Price, Eller, Pacioretty and Subban, and we'll be a harder team to beat.

Avoid injuries.

And this is not just for us, it's for pretty much every team.

The parity in the league IS real, and injuries/lucky breaks will do more to win or lose you a cup than nearly anything else, seriously. Montreal has a pretty solid roster, we can improve with 1 top 6 forward and maybe 1 more solid D, but at the end of it what we need is healthy players come playoff times, and with Price in net everything is possible. Boston showed it this year, they did not have the best roster, but they were healthy and their opponents were not. 3 of the 4 teams they faced was practically missing their #1 D.

Put a management and coaching staff in place that actually WANTS to win the Cup and is not simply satisfied with making the playoffs !!!

First step..

Does Shanahan have a song playing hockey? If So sign him..

Second step...

Move the Canadiens to an American city so Bettmen can support you...

Third step....

Once step one and two are in place, Martin has to get his players to be dirty and play physical. Any injuries the Habs do will go unpunished because they were all "Good hockey plays".

Sorry to say it, but this cup is tainted and smelt of collusion for a long time now.. I don't respect nor support this. If the Habs have to do this to win a cup, than I'm finished with the NHL....

Didn't you hear? 0.5ppg players who make 700k play any role they're told to and go in front of the net = useless on the habs forum. Darche was labeled a #13 and for some people that's what he'll always be. (Even though statistically he put up 3rd liner numbers and played at worst like a solid 4th liner all around )

1) Have fewer injuries.
2) Keep any two of {Markov, Wisniewski, Hamrlik}
3) Add a top-6 forward with size, be it Jagr or Brooks Laich or whoever.

Not much, really.

1) Sign Markov
2) Sign Gorges
3) Stay reasonably healthy.

Any additional signings are just a bonus. The return of Markov instantly makes Gomez better - it's true, check the stats. Automatically our PP and PK will be better with him in the lineup. Markov and Subban manning the points will be deadly. Unless Price falls apart, there's no reason to think we won't be much improved next season.

If Chara didn't take out Max, I honestly thought we had a shot this year. But next season is an even better chance - salary cap goes up, no one needs a big raise, Price and Subban and Eller are all still on cheap deals and MaxPac won't be making too much either.

We're better than Boston right now. Their team will get worse before next season, ours will get better.

The team has no chance for any success without upgrading at the Gomez position. Tough job but that's why Gauthier is paid what he gets paid.

Dump Gomez and get a true first line center. And get a few more bigger and tougher players for the bottom six.

Learn not to take penalties. They were a great special teams club and pretty decent at ES but were done in somewhat by their terrible penalty differential. Losing Hamrlik and Pouliot would do wonders as they are the worst at taking more than they receive. Playing Pacioretty more will help as he's both disciplined and a penalty drawing ninja. Some might call out Subban for his huge amount of penalties but that's alright so long as he keeps drawing so many to compensate.

Staying healthy yes..but it's not a guarantee

That's why you need depth; if a key player goes down, it's not a problem if you have enough firepower

Unfortunately we are already handicapped with Gomez as huge baggage, so until we get rid of this pylon we don't have much of a chance of anything.

A space eating, hard to move top six forward.

In addition to Subban at least two more top 4 d-men to get Gorges, Emelin and Gill out of the top 4 and fighting for the third pairing instead.

If the Habs would get that then they need to stay healthy. That's a big IF in itself. If the Habs can manage that (that's a big IF) then.............

Hot goaltender: Price hasn't exactly proven himself yet.

A healthy, effective playoff Markov: have never really seen that either.

A more aggressive system then what has been shown under JM. Although in his defence when Gill and Gorges are in the top 4 you have to sit back and play to their strengths.

Effective powerplay: Habs' powerplay is effective during the season and then takes a break during the playoffs.

Good coaching: some manipulating of the refs is a must instead of an emotionless statue.

-One physical d-man = John Erskine
-2 bigger, tougher forwards to fill out bottom 6 = Zenon Konopka and Matt Bradley
-healthy Markov and Gorges = This would help!

Yeah because 1st line centers are walking the streets waiting for a reasonable(5.6 mil) contract.

I couldn't agree more. He is a pylon and the biggest bust. I swear that Sather must have had some really compromising pictures of someone on the Montreal organization for us to assume such a liability.

-Dump Pouliot
-Sign/trade for a #3, #4 D
-Whoever is responsible for PRO scouting! Fire them!
-Add more sandpaper/grit/toughness/PK specialist on the 4th line
(Tom Pyatt is not one of them) at the draft or after July 1st.
-Get Top 9/Top 6 player (Chris Kelly/Rich Peverley/Dave Bolland) at the trade deadline.
