Markov to the Leafs

Just saw this in Eklund's latest article. I know its Eklund, but it would be an interesting topic to discuss. What contract would the leafs give Markov?Would the habs trade his rights for something?Do leafs fans even want Markov?

I think MTL will probably resign him.

I think the feeling for both parties are that they want to stay together.

He will sign in Montreal. If he doesn't I see him in Washington with OV if anywhere else as they are best buds and that is a young D-corps.

Only if it was a short term contract. Dude gets injured way too often.

Don't see him taking a short term contract though.

Markov and Montreal will strike a deal in my opinion.

Just for the sake of the thread, I'd give him a little less than Kaberle money(4.5/year) for a short term.

I'd love for him to come to Toronto, I really doubt it happens though.

Everyone keeps saying that but Washington's got no money for a big time free agent defenseman. They've got to deal with their forward depth issues not add another to a team that already has a bunch of defenders.

So the Leafs aren't signing Markov then. Already knew that, but I suppose the confirmation helps.

I hope it doesn't happen. I don't think it will happen either. I thought it would be interesting though

Well, this would be one way to get Mike Komisarek going in the right direction.

Yea, as much as I'd like Markov on the Caps, Schultz would need to be traded, Hannan not re-signed, and Poti to go on LTIR for sure for this to even have a chance of happening.

A lot of people bring up how many D the Caps have, but their options in the top-4 are pretty slim.

Alzner-Carlson is the only set pair.
Green and Wideman would both be candidates to be on the 2nd pair, but they absolutely could not play together, it would be a disaster.
Erskine's a bottom pairing guy
Poti may never play again.
GMGM seems to be in love with Schultz, so he's probably hoping that he'll secure the spot next to Green. Obviously Markov would be a huge improvement (if he could stay healthy).

I hope it doesn't happen. I just don't get why the Leafs would want to sign Markov, but let go of Kaberle so badly, just doesn't make sense.

I'd rather have Kaberle back than signing Markov.

Its because Markov is better than Kaberle today.

He won't be signing in Toronto though.

Thanks, Eklund, for the confirmation that Andrei Markov won't be a Leaf.

Not that I ever expected he would be.

I really hope we can get him, he can really make a powerplay click. I would give him pretty much anything he wants but on short term, maybe something like 5 mill a year for 2-3 years.

I would think that the only way more $ like that would be commited to the blue line would be if someone got traded. This cap space would be better off spent on top 9 forwards.

Certainly would fit a need. hard to imagine markov in another uniform, but it's not impossible. not sure what the habs priorities are in terms of Markov vs. Wiz.

Why does every rumor Eklund posts on his site have to turn into a thread?

There's no chance Burke has interest in Markov considering how much he would want on the open market. Hopefully Burke learned his lesson with Komisarek. It's time to overpay for a star centre, lets not blow more cap space on a risky defenseman.

Guess Eklund is in need of some hits.

Markov will re-sign in Montreal. Probably something short like 5M per for 1-2 yrs.
