I haven't had time to really run the numbers, but right now, all of the unsigned RFAs (Cally, Dubi, Artie, Sauer, etc.) don't count against the cap at all.
Sather is a master of working this stuff.
Yes, Redden is back on the cap, but that's a wash with the 10% overage for the summer cap. And guys like MZA and McDonagh on 2-way contracts don't count the full amount, only the # of days on the roster as a percentage. So right now, assuming the cap goes up to something like 62mm, the NYR have 20-21mm available.
Slats can string out signings until camp starts and a determination as to Drury's fitness is made, if it comes to that (and I don't think it will, personally).
Yes, he's now a bit more limited in what he can do and has to get more creative. But it's not the end of the world.

^^ you do run the risk of offer sheets if you let your RFA's go that long, though the danger does seem to be overblown

I dunno, probably nothing. If he gets money from insurance after retiring he'd probably have to pay that back

That's just you...

Its laughable to me that people think Drury owes the Rangers something but doesn't owe his family the extra earnings..

Who the heck is anybody on here to tell somebody to walk away from money for the good of the team that was kicking him out?

This thread has made me laugh out loud 3 times already...Some of these childish reactions are downright pathetic..

Pretty sure everything will work out.

What happens if a player is placed on LTIR?

Does the cap hit go away?

Sure I can. Like I said, you don't know me. And I don't think Drury owes us anything. This isn't about the fans or even the organization really. It's about the other 22 guys in the lockerroom who are supposed to be his friends.

1.67 mil to Drury is probably like 10 or 20k to us. If you were in his position, given how much money you have now, would you do the same thing for 10 or 20k? I wouldn't, not when I'm already getting 20 or 40k anyway.

During the regular season, yes.
During the summer, no.

Buyout Wolski - same amount of cap savings, smaller hit next year.

holy Christmas, some of u guys are insane for jumping on this - nothing has been confirmed, nor do we know anything about the injury or what dru and his agent are discussing with the Rangers...it'll work itself out, just chill out.

As for Richards, there's been posturing going on for a while from him in relation to NY, he needs leverage heading into July 1st. Expect TO and a previously unmentioned team in Richards rumors (Det?) get involved. Personally I'm on the fence about signing him...we need him now and at least the next 3 seasons to plau with Gaborik, but signing him until he's 37 or 38 might be tough to swallow.

Vancouver made some funny moves at the beginning of 10-11 when they put Sammy Salo on LTI. The Rangers still have the space to sign their guys and add Richards. Buying out Wolski frees up the same money with lesser cap hits. Maybe look to sign Anisimov and Sauer to longer deals than just 2 years. A little more $ now and they save $ with the longer deal. Erixon's $1.75M doesn't count in the summer but it counts during the season. His cap hits accounts for almost 25% of Drury's cap hit.

Drury is already a scapegoat for this team. If he decides to stay and eat up space, he will be demonized. I hated Drury's contract, but I liked him as a person. This might change everything.

I'm going to guess that the rangers knew about this injury all along. Buying him out is probably embarrassing and maybe Drury just wants to go out on his own terms. This could be a blessing in disguise.

The Rangers definitely knew about it...

I do think this is something that's just going through the process at the moment and it's not like a big revelation at this point where Drury suddenly sprung it on them

This might also be why Wolski was reportedly a "maybe" on getting bought out...it depends on what happens with Drury, etc. The Rangers have likely been planning with this for a long time now.

Sigh. LTIR does NOT remove the cap hit during the season. It only allows you to replace the player's salary, but you have to use all your available cap space before you can go over the salary cap.

Well... I guess this means we throw 8.5 mil at Richards so we get the full effect of Drury going on LTIR like Brooks said

easiest way to deal with the summer cap issue is to agree on new deals with dubi and cally but delay announcing them until cap. obviously explain to them the reason so there are no issues and let them remain 'unsigned' officially until camp

Does this means some of our RFAs do not get their new contracts (at least officially signed) until September 15th when Redden is waived?

What's the name of that baseball player who retired because he felt he wasn't living up to his contract, and how much more money than $1.7 million did he end up giving up?

Naslund gave up $4 mill by retiring after his first year with the Rangers, because he felt he wasn't playing well

Naslund is a hockey player, sir. Yet that is equally valid. Moreso even.

OK, so you would walk away from $10-$20k that your company would have to pay you, because it would make the company stronger? Yeah, right.

It's time for someone to post that Sather pic of him pulling the rabbit out of his hat cause he's gonna need to do that this summer. These bad contracts may still bite him in the arss.

And no to buyout of Wolski it's a move we are gonna regret. Everytime someone suggests buying out Wolski they replace him with a worse player. So unless you have a plan to bring in a better option at LW with a buyout of Wolski give it a rest.

If they elect arbitration, that won't be an option. Plus, their QO's will still count against the summer cap, so we wouldn't be saving as much, and they'd still be able to sign an offer sheet. Too risky. Get them signed.

So does this mean our 22 mil in cap space turns into 9 mil because of Drury and Redden...
