Vokoun insight

It just doesn't seem likely for Philly especially since he mentions Colorado explicitely

Carchidi mentions Nabakov as an option but I don't want the guy..for me it's Bryzgalov or Vokoun....everybody else won't be much of an answer.

Tomas Vokoun is still available.

The goalie who turns 35 July 2, will be an unrestricted free agent as of July 1. He told Mlada fronta Dnes, a major Czech newspaper, that he is not thinking of accepting an offer from Avangard Omsk of the Russian KHL, because the NHL remains his preference.

His last seaon, spent with the Florida Panthers wasn’t too shabby either: eighth among goalies with 92.2 per cent save average (on 1,616 saves), in 57 games, GAA 2.55, plus six shutouts.

According to Mlada fronta Dnes, Vokoun has heard from Philadelphia where the club is trying to decide whether to hire Ilya Bryzgalov whose rights it had obtained from the Phoenix Coyotes, or look elsewhere (such as

Vokoun) instead, and from the Coyotes who would like to replace the spot left by Bryzgalov’s departure.

“I would not be displeased if I got a good offer from Floria and accepted it,” the paper quotes Vokoun as saying. “But if I happen to get an offer from a team that might have a chance to challenge for the Stanley Cup, now, that might be irresistible.”

Like which team?

“Like Colorado,” Vokoun said.

If you read the thread on the main boards, this article is bogus. Either the writer is fabricating or made an honest mistake in translation. Some of the native speakers chimed in and mentioned how he never specifically mentions Colorado.

I believe us, Colorado, Washington, and maybe another were mentioned in passing, just as teams that may have interest though.

Maybe so...seems this piece picked up on it

You see a lot of stuff out there on the Interweb, and here was an interesting item on a Edmonton Journal blog today concerning pending free-agent goalie Tomas Vokoun, where he allegedly told a Czech newspaper that would be attracted to an offer from Colorado on July 1 because….they have a good chance for a Stanley Cup in the near future.

I will say this: Greg Sherman, when I talked to him a few days ago in Boston, didn’t seem to have a very worried look on his face when asked about the team’s goaltending situation. It would be tampering, of course, if he knew he already had a deal with Vokoun assured – and of course I’m not suggesting that’s happened. It just seemed to me that Sherman looked like a guy who already knew what will happen regarding the goalie.

Makes sense about the tampering...

Quote:
The Edmonton Journal posted a translation of a Czech newspaper article in which soon-to-be unrestricted free agent goaltender Tomas Vokoun was interviewed about his potential destinations.

Vokoun stated that, while he is interested in returning to Florida given a fair offer, he would also consider offers from Stanley Cup contenders, among which he (rather oddly) identified the rebuilding Colorado Avalanche.

The Journal translation also has Vokoun saying that he's "heard from" the Flyers. I suspect that this is a mistranslation -- prepositions are extremely easy to mess up in translation, and can sometimes change the meaning of a sentence. I suspect that what Vokoun actually said is that he's heard about the Flyers having interest in him.

This is a very important distinction: If Vokoun said the former, he would be casually telling the press that the Flyers were guilty of tampering. The latter makes more sense, especially in light of the fact that the Flyers traded for Bryzgalov's negotiating rights but probably would still have interest in Vokoun if they are unable to get Bryzgalov signed.

If he wants to challenge for the Cup now, he isn't going Colorado

If Vokoun has heard from us, then we are guilty of tampering.

I sure as hell hope that's a mistranslation about hearing from Philly.
