So many times he was rumored to arrive here via trade. Now that he has won the cup, is he a good fit as a vet D man with puck moving skills?
He is interminably frustrating in that he really does not shoot the puck and we all know how that goes over at MSG. But he does get it down the ice and is a good distributor on the PP.
Kaberle was far from impressive in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and I have seen several times when even Bruins fans were bashing him.
He is going to command a lot of money like Fitzy said. That money is better spent on improving the offense. I'd leave it to our young guys to continue to develop. I still see untapped offensive potential in Staal.
Noo, just because he's been to one scf doesn't make him a veteran, and the only veteran I want is a cheap 7th. Kaberle will not be cheap and won't be a 7th so no, I'm content with our defense as of now. The focus has to be on forwards.
I am a big NO as well but you know his agent will be calling
I think knowing the Ranger's history whenever you have any big-ticket free agent you expect them to be calling the Rangers, even if they've never expressed any interest in their clients.
Getting the Rangers involved, or at least appeared to be involved, means the price will be driven up and that means more money for their client.
I am happy that the Rangers haven't expressed any interest in him and I do expect their to be some kind of Kaberle to the Rangers rumors assuming TK isn't snapped up in the first couple of days.
He did not impress during his time in Boston. I think we are seeing a declining player and signing him would be a mistake. IMHO
I agree, and lets hope Sather can finally learn from his mistakes because can't we all see Sather signing Richards and Kaberle. I really think the acquisition of Erixon was an amazing one because this should be our defense opening night IMO
Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
Erixon-Gilroy
7th d-man Eminger
I really thought we would go after Pitkanen very hard and overpay for his services, but Erixon can run the PP and is far cheaper to Pitkanen, Kaberle, or trading for a Liles.
There is still a chance Sather passes on Gilroy and maybe adds Babchuk which would be great IMO, but even if we go with Erixon (who should develop into a top 4 d-man) with Gilroy, we have Eminger there for depth and Valentenko, Del Zotto, and Kundratek in the minors if needed and thats not even talking about McIlrath. Erixon should be the answer to our 2 way puck moving d-man who can run the PP, its a lot of pressure for a rookie, but if we bring in Richards he can run the PP as well.
One of the most unimpressive top 4 defenseman in the playoffs IMHO. Huge pass....

Replace Gilroy with one of MDZ/Valentenko and I'll be happy. I'm going to guess that Gilroy is likely gone now that we've acquired Erixon and have his increased cap hit on the 3rd pairing. It would not be feasible to pay $1.5-2 mil for Gilroy's services.

I agree with you 100%, if I was calling the shots our defense would be
Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
Erixon-Valentenko
7th man - Eminger
Apparently the rangers were very happy with what they got from Gilroy in the playoffs and are going to make him an offer, hopefully that offer is a million bucks for one year, I can live with that. I agree his services are not really needed, but since when does this team do what makes sense?

I'd also like to see Valentenko back there. Very solid reports about his progress in the AHL last year and I love physical lay and shot-blocking!

The rumors of the offer to Gilroy were before we obtained Erixon. Hopefully, the acquisition of Erixon means we simply let Gilroy go and bring Eminger back to fight for the 6th spot with Del Zotto, Valentenko, and even Kundratek (unlikely).
