As a Leafs fan I would say no to 8.5-9 mil x 8 years...but I would say yes to 7.5 mil x 7 years.

My friend, a leafs fan, said he wants Richards "more than he wants his wife to crave p***y." (Stole it from Ari Gold on Entourage)

I would think something similar to Briere deal would be in order, only more.

I want Richards, and I would be ok with offering a five year deal worth $40 million.

If he's looking for 8 years, there is no way a team will be willing to pay him $8 million at ages 37-39. If long-term stability is what he's looking for, an 8 yr deal with the 1st 5 at $8 million and the salary decreasing in the final 3 years is ok with me if it gets it done.

It also lowers his cap hit, and makes him attractive in his later years to teams with internal caps if there is to be departure btw Richards and the Leafs.

If he wants 8 yrs with a cap hit of $8-$9 million, I hope he enjoys Broadway.

If he wants a 60+ mil contract, he ain't gonna see Broadway unless it is as a tourist.

Then why not post it in the Leafs board?

To answer the question anyways, I would not want him at 8million+

I live in Laval, but am a Leafs fan, so I will chime in my two cents. Nobody but Brad and his agent know exactly what kind of term and money he is looking for, but I HIGHLY doubt the Leafs, or even the Rangers for that matter, will offer him the kind of money and term you mentioned.

Having a 38 or 39 year old declining Richards on an $9 million cap hit is not desireable even for the wealthiest of teams, so if those are his demands obviously they will have to come down.

If we can lock up Richards for say, $7.5-$8 million for no more than 6 years, than yes I would be absolutely all for it. That would give us the number one centre we need to compete in the playoffs right now, while simultaneously allowing us to take our time with the development of Kadri and Colborne-with Richards in place the kids wont have to be rushed into roles they arent ready for.

So yeah, I would be comfortable with $7.5-$8 million per year for 6 years. Any more than that and I walk away if Im Brian Burke.

I bet you you doesn't go to Tampa. They don't need him and his cap hit.

It'll likely be Toronto, Buffalo and New York offering a contract.

And I must have missed Leaf fans claiming Kovalchuk will sign in Toronto.

Do you always blow everything out of context??? Maybe you should try not to be so literal.

If he was going to TB why wait for July 1st? It just doesn't make sense.

Richards may be ready to waive his NTC and sign with Tampa but it takes two to tango - from the media reports out of Tampa, it sounds like Yzerman isn't ready yet to jump on the Richards bandwagon without first securing some of his existing players and making sure he has some of the more pressing holes on his roster covered (i.e. goaltending, defense).

Because he can't on his own until the start of free agency and he doesn't want to weaken his future team by making them trade draft picks when they'll get him anyway?

No.
So he is adamant that he will wait til july 1, So obviously he wants the highest bidder and longest term. I have a feeling more teams are kicking tires on this than anyone thought and the bidding is gonna get stupid. He will be paid twice what hes really worth.Didnt really help a dallas team that is not that bad on paper did he?
If its more than 40 million id say No thanks.
Id much rather carter.
Even if I have to take a bad contract with it Carter for his contract is way more appealling

So, does Tampa have the cap room? Would this mean the Marty St Louis would be gone? Stamkos is gonna be looking for a big contract also? Just doesn't seem like they have the room, unless Vinny gets traded to the leafs...

does spending young assets on the trade market for one seem any better. The only thing Richards cost is money. My offer 7.5*(6-7 years)

Some of you are absolutely ridiculous in thinking Tampa can't sign Richards without losing Stamkos, Lecavalier, St. Louis etc.

As a Leaf fan, Richards is the right man for the job.

Every year there are free agents and I'm not the type to want to sign them all just because they are available. I'm more interested in waiting to get the right player to fit the team and Richards is that player.

This guy is similar enough to Sundin that we fans would instantly love having him on the team, and he still has many quality years left at the top of his game.

If he doesn't sign with Toronto, it will be a missed opportunity for sure

Exactly. I'm not say he doesn't want to play for TB, he wants to, just not at the price SY is willing to give him.

Burke is so desperate for a #1 center, he will out bid everyone.

My guess at the start of all this was 8x8.
