Swapping 1st round picks

Inspired by another thread. Would a trade like this ever happen in real life?

To Philadelphia: Pittsburgh's 1st in 2012

To Pittsburgh: Philadelphia's 1st in 2012

Adds to the rivalry

Swapping first its pretty rare(swaping 2 to 3 spot ahead or back) ... usually you give few pick to upgradre your choice rate (for a swap of 5 spot or more ahead) Ex. a second(36) a fourth(66) for a 1st pick.(22) or you give your 1st for a decent player (Tanguay trade cgy/mtl) otherwise we will never see a 30th overall for a top 5 or even a top 10. still their is always exception!!

You can also swap your first for previous drafted guys (1st 2011 for 11 overall in 2010) but still rare.

Sens traded the #16 pick in 2010 (Vladmir Tarasenko) to St. Louis for David Rundblad (17th pick in 2009).

"Nash is the first Canadian taken with the first overall pick since Vincent Lecavalier was taken by Tampa Bay in 1998.

Columbus had been in the third draft position, but traded draft spots with Florida and also has the option to swap first-round selections with Florida next season,"

I think some of the posters are taking it too seriously. It's a hypothetical and I think it would be awesome to see unfold.

You've got 2 teams who are probably going to be in the upper echelon of the East switching picks. Gives Pens fans more reason to despise Philly/hope they lose and vise versa. Imagine them playing early in the playoffs (I'm sure it doesn't/wouldn't matter to the players) the fans of the losing team not only do they watch the bitter rivals move on, but watch as their 1st rounder gets later in the 1st round. Salt in the wound is what it would be.

It would suck if they did that and one team for whatever reason had an awful year and lost out on a top 10 pick...

Just like the Leafs and the Bruins (although the Bs traded their first much later)

I believe the fans would just curse their own GM for making such a trade.

I would trade either of the Leafs firsts this year for any first next year which does seem possible if another team really likes a player at 25 or 30 that's still on the board.

This would never happen as proposed by the OP. Consider that teams want to look at RFA's.

It's an open question as to whether that was MacLean being competent or Dudley being incompetent.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!
