CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $62,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $56,800,000; BONUSES: $2,337,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $5,400,000

ideally this is the lineup i would like to take into this season. Drury and Redden being on the summer cap might hurt the chances of this happening but I wouldnt be surprised to see some of our RFA's wait to sign their contracts. I think we should buyout Wolski annd Christensen and go with a lineup like the one above. You have to subtract about 800,000 from our cap space to account for the buyouts, but I believe we could be serious contenders with this lineup. What do you guys think

We'd save more by buying out Avery rather than Christensen, and Christensen is at least useful in the shootout.

Jokinen isn't signing for 3 mil either. He had 52 points in 70 games last year, a slightly better per game average than Dubinsky, and he had 65 points the year before. As a UFA, he'll probably get at least 4.5 per year.

That lineup also doesn't include any spare forwards, though maybe we can us Drury's LTIR for that.

I'd be more interested in a Brooks Laich than a Jussi Jokinen. He's more rounded and more physical. Can even play the point on the pwp. And I agree that Jokinen is going to be at least $4.5mil--and that's too much especially if it's for more than two years.

On Christensen--for the amount of cap space he takes--I don't have a problem with him. Yeah--he disappears for stretches and he doesn't hit but every once in a while he turns a game around in our favor.

As for Avery--I think he's coming back. Wolski I'm not so sure--if we're looking to save some real bucks his is the job that's on the line.

Waivers begin 12 days before the regular season starts. In previous situations(Lukas Krajicek),the player who breached his contract was placed on unconditional waivers first and then contract was terminated by TB. If Redden doesn't report to camp and breaches his contract, the Rangers would have to wait about a week before being able to waive Redden and terminate the contract. They would get the $6.5M to spend in the summer cap with 10 days to the start of the season. Erik Ersberg had cleared waivers and then bolted Manchester for the KHL. Kings terminated the contract.

That's interesting, have there been any reports on what Redden is leaning towards? Is he thinking of bolting to Europe or attempting the NHL again, or is it strictly the bus rides in the minors from here on?

According to Bruce Berlet,Redden does not want to play in Europe. Redden didn't reveal much before leaving CT for his summer home in British Columbia.

Brian Rafalski? Well, not quite, because he's walking away from $6m.

Rumors swirled around that Sather would buy out Naslund, but Naslund decided to take the higher road and call it quits. Although, he didn't have such a safety net in place like Drury.

No, we don't need him to retire to sign Richards and our RFAs.

I don't think we can buy out Avery since Dallas is still paying half his salary. How would that work?

Another example that makes Drury look like a punk.

Especially when you consider the relative performances Rafalski and Drury put in for their respective teams.

Why not offer the leech money to retire? Relieves us of a $7 million cap hit.

The NHL upper limit should be released this Friday. It's always the Friday afternoon before the draft that night. Brooks usually makes a big deal about the NHLPA having a big fight on whether or not to vote for the 5% escalator but didn't mention it in today's column. The NHLPA votes usually votes this week and then the PA execs get together with the NHL to set the upper limit.

If we buyout avery it gets split between us and dallas, avery gets 2/3. Stars and rangers pay 1/3 each.

but does the cap get split too? that's the only important number. besides, didn't I read somewhere that Avery and Richards were actually friends in Dallas? his one saving grace?

I believe the cap hit gets split as well.

Sean Avery buyout from CapGeek.com

2011-12: $1,208,333 ($604,167 each team)
2012-13: $1,333,333 ($666,667 each team)

So we would save around 1.3 million this year.

Regarding Avery, given that buying him out only gets us 1.3m, and given that we'd have to fill his slot with someone costing pretty close to that at the least, it's pretty much a nobrainer to keep him.

yeah, we will have so many contract expiring after this year. just put up with it for one more year and we'll be free of all sorts of crazy contracts.
