Quote:
@TSNBobMcKenzie
Bob McKenzie

I'm told the upper limit of the 2011-12 NHL salary cap will be $64 million. The lower limit, or floor, will be $48 million.

If I'm Frolik, I laught at the Hawks if they try to offer 2 mil. With a cap this high, someone will give him 3 mil. They can go up to 3.1 and still only give up a 2nd rounder.

Please make a play for a playmaking left winger or center, Bowman.

I'll say one thing though. I actually don't care to see Campbell traded anymore. With this cap rising so rapidly, re-signing Sharp should be doable even with Soupy still here.

My initial thought is we could afford someone for as high as maybe like $3.7 million per, but could the chances of retaining Brouwer gone up?

Also, I don't think Frolik will get that much.

Yes but 38 pt players dont become 3.1M players

(Unless Dale Tallon is the GM of team signing the player)

Possibly. Only a few teams spend to the cap.

An average 22 player roster now allows teams to pay each player an average of 2.909 million per year. I do think Frolik is an above average player. That being said, I only said I would laugh at being offered 2 mil if I were him.

The 3.1 mil marker was just me pointing out that the compensation lost for someone to sign him is irrelevant.

If a team offers him a 3 year deal for 7.5 (2.5 per)...and the Hawks have been lowballing him all along as many on this forum have suggested they do with offers like 1.6 or something, then we may lose him or be forced to match at a higher rate. That's all I meant. Either way his price just went up, as did Campolis and Brouwers.

There is another bad possible outcome with cap going up

Huet buyout is now more economically feasible

Wirtz would save money ,, 1.875M cap hit for 2 years might be more likely to be considered

HOpefully it doesn't happen but it is a concerning thought

Crazy that the Hawks are going to have $10 mil more in cap space from last year to this year.

I think it may inflate Frolik's salary a little bit... so maybe he'll get 2.5 or 2.6 instead of the 2.2 that I realistically thought he'd get.

Keep in mind, we're still not exactly sure if the cap will go all the way to 64 mil (although I trust what McKenzie has to say)

This is what I want to see next year:

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS
Patrick Sharp ($3.900m) / Jonathan Toews ($6.300m) / Patrick Kane ($6.300m)
Michael Frolik ($2.750m) / Dave Bolland ($3.375m) / Marian Hossa ($5.275m)
Bryan Bickell ($0.541m) / Marty Reasoner ($2.050m) / Ben Smith ($0.812m)
Arron Asham ($1.100m) / Zenon Konopka ($0.850m) / Mike Rupp ($1.000m)
/ Ryan Johnson ($0.625m)

DEFENSEMEN
Duncan Keith ($5.538m) / Brent Seabrook ($5.800m)
Brian Campbell ($7.142m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)
Nick Leddy ($1.116m) / UFA/Trade ($1.200m)
Jordan Hendry ($0.650m)

GOALTENDERS
Corey Crawford ($2.666m) / Alexander Salak ($0.612m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,106,337; BONUSES: $545,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $893,663

I went as high as I think we would actually offer for Frolik, Asham, Reasoner, Konopka, Rupp and a 6th defenseman.

I think we got something good here, boys

I wouldn't worry about it. A buyout actually affects the team's ability now and in the future, even if it is only an extra year... and I think Rocky (deep pockets and all) cares more about keeping the team as competitive as possible instead of saving money.

We did it last year, I don't see why we wouldn't do it next year as well. We're going to pay Huet that money regardless, might as well do it where he won't be on the cap and in one lump sum instead of spread out over two.

Edit: More interestingly, does this increase the likelihood of Kruger and Morin spending the entire year in the AHL next year? Before with safe estimates being around 62 mil, the option was always there because we might get more bang for our buck... now we don't have worry about getting as much value for our dollar and can go out and spend our money on what we think will be the absolute best.

I like Reasoner and all, but anything over $1.8 million is overpayment. If you want someone who can PK and actually hit the score sheet a little bit, you could get Higgins for that. Higgins might not be the best option, but it's an example.

That may be, but I think Reasoner had a great season and will be sought out by many teams. The 2 mil figure is just to ensure that we get him. I think he'll get around that from somebody and I hope that it's us if we have the cap room for it.

Give Johnson the shuttle to Rockford for a little while to get some more cap space for a potential deadline acquisition.
