I agree with Larry, Briere should be moved back to wing. He is too small and limited defensively to be playing center in the eastern conference on a long time basis.
I disagree that Briere had a horrible season playing wing in 09-10. First of all, he had 27 goals and 50+ points so his season wasn't that bad, and second, he was going through a divorce which probably had much more to do with his playing being a little bit down than anything else. I also think Briere's success moving back to center int he playoffs had more to do with having the right guy to play with in Leino than where he was playing. Briere plays his best when he has a purely skilled playmaker with him and when he played win that season Carter wasn't that guy for him.
More realistically, what if it was the 8th pick we got for Carter, is Murphy worth it?
He's a high risk/high reward player. If the Flyers had a good prospect base, he'd be well worth the risk. I'd sooner see him than Hamilton or Strome though, out of the players I've seen. I think he'd fit in very well in Lavi's system, and paired with a stay at home defender.

Knowing the Flyers, they'd go off the board and pick a guy ranked 54th by all the services and he'll be great (a la Downie and Giroux).
You want to call up Wellwood, Holmstrom, Sesito, Marshall and Gustaffson and expect them to be successful in the NHL? Sestito, maybe. But the others? Wellwood and Holmstrom looked OK in the few games they played. Gustaffson didnt look that great and still needs more time in the AHL. And Marshall? REALLY? Marshall hasnt even stepped a foot in the NHL and you already have him paired up with Pronger? He hasnt even impressed with the Phantoms

Then put shelley where Holmstrom is. I only put Marshall with Pronger because I feel he is our most NHL ready Dman in the AHL and Pronger can make almost anyone look good.
I dont see how this lineup works, of those call ups to fill out the roster I only had 3 of them in the lineup, it would be 2 if you drop Holmstrom to the bench for Shelley. I feel this lineup is a hell of a lot better and more realistic than most of what we have seen posted. Our young D men need to make the transition some time.

I wish I'd seen Niedermayer play in junior. That's who Murphy reminds me of most recently, and I've heard Nieds needed to work on the defensive side of the game when he was drafted. Murphy uses his smarts and speed to angle opposing forwards out of the play, but will never be the guy to blow someone up in front of the net. He has added a wicked hipcheck to his repertoire though, along with his world class speed and elusiveness.
I'm a big fan. I just don't know that he's the right fit for the Flyers at this point in time.

He's got a great work ethic, and he's very solid on both ends of the ice. Hes got size and a very good ceiling. I can envision him as turning into a Marc Staal type defenseman.
Also, according his scouting report, he's listed as 6'4" but is actually closer to 6'6"-6'7" now.

If Carter is moved it would be because we are blown out of the water with the return which is plausible. The Meltzer scenario would be most ideal but no way Carter stays in Colombus. Toronto would be involved ...maybe a flyers,toronto,blue jackets and florida transaction?

Eh, 16 minutes in his first NHL game wasnt bad. The other games they used him barely which I can understand (end of the season, etc). I liked how he played. This was also during the time when we solely focused on pitching. Near the end of the AHL, he started to play more defensive.

If Dougie becomes anywhere near Marc Staal, I'd agree with you. I just haven't seen anything to write home about in the games I've seen him play. He's big. I haven't seen him use that size as well as he could, but that may come. I'm not a big fan, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong if the Flyers were to draft him.

Funny thing about Hamilton is that he was never a defenseman. He used to be a forward and converted. Maybe if he was drafted, he could be put in the role like Byfuglien? He has size so he could be in front of the goalie like Pronger/Chara.
If trading Carter and Versteeg means bringing in Voracek, Moore and Landeskog I'd have tears of joy running down my cheeks.
Only problem with that scenerio is that I agree with the writer in that it doesnt improve the team this year aside from in the net. The offense becomes less potent and not as deep. If thats what goes down I think the Flyers need to bring in another forward to try and solidify the depth, but that is a move that can be made closer to the deadline after watching what the likes of Nodl, Powe, Wellwood, Landeskog can do with decent minutes.
Maybe if Columbus really likes us, they can send us the rights to Upshall...or just sign him July 1, dude loved it here. Would be a great fit on the Kitchener line
