Bolts not close to re-signing Bergenheim

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...ld-test-market

We quoted Lightning GM Steve Yzerman on Monday saying both sides were not close in talks to re-sign playoff revelation Sean Bergenheim, a UFA July 1. The agent concurred Tuesday.

"We have a different set of opinion in terms of the value of Sean. That's basically it," agent Todd Diamond told ESPN.com. "We both agree he brings a value to the team, but the difficult part is agreeing on how much that's worth."

Sounds to us like Bergenheim and Diamond want to see what's out there July 1 before circling back to Yzerman.

Well honestly... how much is John Druce or Chris Kontos really worth?

No surprises here. Too much other **** for SFY to do right now then play phone tag with an agent playing hardball over a 3rd liner. Deserves a pay raise, but he just wasn't going to get it from us.

Good luck Thor.

I'm sure he'll get his payday from someone. He opened a lot of eyes in the playoffs.

Trying to cash in on his playoff performance, can't say I blame him.

Good thing Steve Yzerman is a smart guy. I can't blame Bergenheim and his agent for thinking it's payday after having such a great playoffs, but the reality is most people are smarter than that.

You've got a lot more to prove, Sean.

Yzerman likely is putting his value at about 1.5-2

Bergenheim is likely wanting 3 or 3.5 for his playoff performance.

Edit: as a note, that's a complete guess on my part. I have zero sources and have seen zero articles about Bergenheim's asking price.

LOL if true. If he wants that I'd tender him and tell him take it or leave it and don't play in the NHL for the next 3 years. Insane price for 1 good year

They're probably using Colby Armstrong as a comparison. Put up 29 points with the Thrashers before he got signed by the Leafs, same as Bergenheim did this year. So, yeah, probably wants from $2.5-3m.

Bergie had good only two months (PO). He was six seasons third line winger and now, after one Play-Off is top6 forward? Wtf? Yes, he played well in Play-Off, but it was only 16 matches. He had 700k cap hit last year, and IMO he deserves only $1.4 mil. to next year. He cannot demand a salary higher than $1.8 mil. per year.

The next Pisani (in terms of overpaying for a playoff performance).

I gotta go with those saying he's asking for 3ish... if it was 1.5-2 I think Yzerman would have resigned him already

Can not blame him for cashing in on his playoff. I sort of hope it isn't the Leafs that gives him his payday, because I am afraid it could have been just a hot streak that he rode out for the playoffs. Hopefully he has success somewhere, and plays great though.

It's perfectly reasonable for him to demand $2m, even $2.5m since he's a UFA and there will likely be interest. He has either put up around 30 points or been on a 30 point pace for the past three years. I'm not even sure where you got six seasons as this was his 4th full NHL season. There's plenty of 30 point 3rd liners around the league making that much money.

That's not to say he's a good deal at that price.

Bring him to the Wild. We have really bad left wing depth, could use someone like Bergie with all the Finnish players we have.

Bergenheim will be worth it to a contender, either as a slightly overpaid 3rd liner in the regular season (teams confident they'll make playoffs), or as a player signed with the intention of dumping for assets at the deadline (non-contender teams). Teams on the borderline can sign him and at the deadline choose if they're buyers or sellers. Being a playoff performer is valuable at the deadline.

He's gonna screw himself like Dominic Moore. 1.5-2 is a good deal.

This year? Unlikely. Most teams have enough cap space. Last few years, cap space was mostly gone by July 10th or so.

Lightning fans: did he learn to penalty kill?

That's always been my knock on Bergy - for a third line forward, he's not good enough away from the puck, and on the PK. Unless he's shored up one or both, he's not worth being paid as a high-end third liner.

Cheers,

Dan-o
