Stamkos

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but is Stamkos up for an offer sheet this season? Anyone hear anything about any teams possibly making a move for him given Tampa's cap situation? I'd gladly give up our next four rounders for him if I were Sather.

Sather doesn't believe in poaching RFAs so we wouldn't do it.

He can be given an offer sheet, but it would have to be a very high number for tampa to not match.

Sather is too lost in the early 80's to make a bold move like that. He's stuck in his old man ways.
We would need Neil Smith to do this.

This. I'd have to imagine they'd match pretty much any offer at this point, so I why bother.

Realistically (and also, hypothetically), what kind of pieces would be going back to Tampa is a stamkos trade? NoT talking about Ranger assets specifically but what pieces/package do they make a trade for IF by some strange reason they have too much trouble signing him?

I'd totally do an offer sheet for Stamkos. He's THAT good! It's not like any of the four 1st rounders would be lottery picks anyway. Forget Richards at 7.5m when he's oft-concussed and get Stamkos on a frontloaded deal ~8-8.5m.

Jim Rutherford offered Sergei Federov a deal when he was an RFA in 1997 or 1998.

On the (extreme) off-chance that he was offer sheeted, Stevey Y. isn't going to sit back and watch it happen.

If there's one player I would surrender a lot of cap space by overpaying, it would be Stamkos. I would give him $9 for 10 years if I thought Tampa would not match it. I think he's a terrific young player who will only get better, and he is worth both the lost picks and the lost cap space.

But Tampa may just match him and then dump Lecavalier and/or St. Louis.

Actually, Tampa should go that way anyway. Of the 9 players who got over 30 points last season, 6 are over 30 years old. Plus, Roloson over 40 and Ellis s more and more unimpressive. They were an ok team and they had a nice playoff run, but I don't see them going up in the coming season. They won't match last season for a while.

you really think they won't match 8-8.5? if that was a possibility you'd have every team who can fit him lining up.

Not to mention that Stamkos would actually have to SIGN the deal. It's not like he could be shipped here against his will, and he's expressed his desire to stay in Tampa basically saying he knows the deal is getting done, just a matter of ironing it out.

With the salary cap increasing, Stamkos could very well be the first player to be offered a double-digit contract: $9-10 million.

Not sure what you mean by watch it happen. Either he'll match it and give Stamkos whatever deal was offered...or he'll take the 4 first round draft picks. If someone offers Stamkos a 10 year 100M deal do you think he will match?

True.. just wishful thinking on my part.. if he commands 9-10, then Tampa is screwed on d-men next offseason:

Everyone forgets the part where Stamkos has to sign the offer sheet. I'm not saying he wouldn't if the money was right but you all talk like its Sather's option.

My bad, that's what I meant though - he wouldn't be lax about it and simply take the compensation, despite how rich it may be. Would he match that?... I wouldn't, but I'm also not a second year NHL GM contemplating what to do with my franchise player that was just OS'ed.

I have a feeling he would be aggressive and match. Stamkos is an incredibly important part of their team (I'm sure it doesn't need to be said...), he'll do what needs to be done to get him locked up long-term, whether it's through negotiations or matching an offer sheet. There's no guarantee that those 4 1st round picks will turn out anything close to what Stamkos is.

Stamkos is worth it. It would not happen just because of how Sather is. Sather would do the Brian Burke, a la overpay through the nose (despite his awesome trading record), which scares me because Stamkos would cost a **** ton as it is.

He is what this team needs. Although he is what alot of teams need.

Would they match an 11-year, $100 million contract? It's very long-term and it would be for $9.1 million annually.

I would do 10 for 100 for Stamkos. I'm sure Stevie Y would match, though

Yes.....I don't think their going to let one of the best players in the game walk under any circumstance.

What is Tampa's "cap situation"? They have a TON of space; they'd match ANY offer thrown at Stamkos. They were just in the ECF and he is the new face of the franchise; he's worth matching even the most overpaid offer sheet for them, from a marketing standpoint as well. There's been talk of Tampa re-signing Stamkos AND signing Richards. Not sure what "cap situation" you were alluding to.

Most people say it was an April Fools Day joke. Some think it wasn't but we will never know for sure.

Tampa has just under 27M in cap space available and the following players to re-sign:

Stamkos
Purcell
Bergenheim
Lundin

Roloson, Bergeron, Smaby, Hall, Gagne, Smith, Jones and Brewer all come off the books. Maybe they bring back one or two of those guys, but they won't cost them much.

Essentially, even if they had to match an offersheet that paid Stamkos 10M per year, they'd still have 17M left over to re-sign 3 other guys and a goalie.

Stamkos would sign it to play with his good buddy MDZ. Realistically it's not going to happen but I would love to see my favorite player become a Ranger before he is 33 that is.
