If a Western Conference team were to come poking around the DFW area, looking for a large Swedish man, what price would Joe Nieuwendyk put on Nicklas Grossman? Late-1st? More?
Definitely more than a late first. He seemed to finally get a mean streak and was very good but then he got injured. No reason for a team like Dallas with defensive struggles to get rid of him unless it's an offer they can't refuse.
I don't really think it's worth discussing what he's worth really, just because we don't really have what it takes to replace a guy like Niklas Grossman right now. Our blue line would be a disaster without him. Unless you traded us back someone better than Grossman at what he does I just don't see it making much sense for us.
I suppose, gun to my head, a late first seems fairly reasonable value, if not actually being a little too much.
The only way it makes sense to trade Grossman is if the medical staff thinks his various lower body injuries are going to be a recurring problem for the rest of his career.
In our current situation for big "stay-at-home" defencemen, we would have to have a minor over-payment for him because our D without him looks dangerously small and weak..
I could see him being available. It would depend on a few things though: Fistric's play under Gulutzan, Dillon's progress, and potential FA acquisitions. The thing about Grossman is that he is one of those quietly solid guys most of the time. He plays like a physical beast about 15% of games during the season. If those games were more common he would become infinitely more useful.
He's on our 1st pairing here but if he were to end up on a stronger team's 2nd or even 3rd pairing he could probably help a team win a Cup in short order...much like his partner on defense.
If we were trading him for a better defenceman than sure do it.
For example: Nicklas Grossman and some additional asset (or assets) for Zach Bogosian.
If not, Dallas has too many parts in their lineup that don't contribute anything, we don't want to start trading away the guys that do make an impact on a nightly basis.
