If correct, this is a home town deal from Markov. I have no doubt that regardles of Markovs injuries there are teams with money that would have offered a bit more but with a longer term. A team that would just put Markov into the minors to bury his contract if he played badly because theyd have money to burn ie Rangers. Its nice to have a guy that really wants to be a Hab for his career and backs it up by taking less. Thanks Markie.

How so ? This is 2 years less than his last contract. He's been injured for a while and no one would be willing to take a risk on him.

If true, this is an ok deal, since he isn't getting a raise.

The cap has gone up by quite a bit since he signed his contract, so I'd say it's a good deal since the total proportion of his contract versus the salary cap has gone down.

On the market he easily goes in Dan Boyle territory of over 6.5M$.

This is an excellent signing if true.

am i the only one that thinks this is wayyyyy to much for him. He has barely played for 2 years. I dont get it why he deserves the same money. What other team would offer him that much with a bum knee. I wouldnt expect and free agent signings after markov and gorges are signed. money wont be there

Well, for the reason I give. Markov is an elite D-man, there are just a few of those and I mean a handful. Its just my opinion but I think there are teams that would have taken a shot at getting an elite D-man even with a history of injuries when the only price is money. Look at guys like Gaborik and Havlat, terrible injury histories but teams paid up big to sign them because of their great talent. There are fewer elite D-men than elite forwards so yes, I think Markov could have gotten some more bucks and over 3-4 years if he had hit the open market.

i agree it is a little much. considering he hasnt playe in such a loing time and another hit might take him out again. but he is a dangerous player everytime he is out the ice.

If it is 5.5 like Tony says, then in reality that saves us cap. We have been this a lot in the past week signing a bunch of our role players for very reasonable price tags when we know they have enormous potential. Hopefully Tonys right as this money saved can go towards another top 6 forward or another top 4 D.

If Markov stays healty, 5.5M per year is a real discount. Some teams would have paid over 6M to get him. Worst case scenario, he breaks a knee and his salary doesn't count under the cap anymore. How much did you think he was going to get? 3M?

He's still great and all, but people are acting like (if true) he took millions less.

How would the money not be there? With Markov the team payroll would be at $49.5 million, so basically $14.5 million left to spend.

to all the haters, this is why he can get injured and still command the same salary, because he can get more on open market

He obviously hasn't looked at any of the roster payrolls lately.

Not sure if serious.

A. I think he deserves the money until he shows that he cant play at a #1-#2 D-man level. and, its not his fault he got hurt.

B. Didn't Wisniewski have a few knee surgeries? Didn't effect him to much. He's better, actually.

EDIT: beaten to it. a few times actually.

C.Money won't be there?if the cap is at 64 million capgeek says we have 20 million ATM. lets say markov signs for 6 million, and gorges for 3 million. WE STILL HAVE 11 MILLION.

is it 11 or 14.5. Oh i do read pay rolls. No add Gorges @3.5 and weber @ 1and a back up @1 and your payroll has seriously decreased. Go grab a look at the payroll.

not haters...

Markov is Elite but with the previous 2 years he had, was thinking to a longer deal close to 4.25-4.5 for 3-4 years
