If the total for Markov is confirm, it leaves enough for another high price defenseman and top 6 forward. Another top defenseman will eleviate Markov and PK. Less minutes means less probability of injury. Would also give us one of the top defense core in the league. With Price in nets makes us contenders.
I would love to re-sign Wiz and then sign Laich (or even Jagr).

It would leave about 9 million left if you figure in a backup goalie, Gorges, white and maybe pyatt.

We have about $20M with 15 signed so if Markov and Gorges sign for a combined $9M ( rounding up a $.5M or so ) leaves us at 17 signed and $11M. Back-up goalie, Weber, White, Pyatt, Pouliot ( or replacement) for about $5M in total leaves $6M or so, cant see more than $7M available for a big signing. Probably the Habs dont go more than $5M-$5.5 or so to leave a little wiggle room as we always do. So enough for 1 big contract. Do we try to sign Wiz and send Spacek to the minors (counts against the cap), or do we go for the big forward who plays a physical game like Laich ?
I have trouble understanding any Habs fan who thinks the Habs should not re-sign their best player, or should offer him LESS because he's suffered some unfortunate injuries the last two years
that's not how you treat one of your cornerstone players, it's bad for business...not to mention that if Markov knee heals like it should, it's a no-brainer to re-sign him. Dont even need to think about it twice
Theres definitely a bunch of defensman I'd look at. Erhoff/Bieksa, Pitkanen and Wiz would be guys I'd be looking at.
Upfront, Laich, Leino.
Not sure if you could get both forward and D under the cap tho. If they could unload Spacek it would be a godsend, but until they do it, I won't count on it.
If we had to chose between one I'd go with the Dman, and then settle for a guy like upshall.

Exactly, and I laugh at those who are suggesting to not bring him back at all.

How so ? This is 2 years less than his last contract. He's been injured for a while and no one would be willing to take a risk on him.
If true, this is an ok deal, since he isn't getting a raise.
Funny I was thinking last week that 2 years at 6 Mil per year would be the deal.
My reasoning was:
What Marky wanted:
He's probably saved about 5 Mil so far, and he probably has a nice house paid for, plus a cottage maybe.
I figured he wants to earn at least 11-12 Mil more in his career, so that he can save another 5 mil minimum.
Career ends, he's got 10 mil in the bank, a nice house paid for. 10 mil will give him say 300 K a year for the rest of his life. That's enough to pay for the kid's school and maintain a pretty good lifestyle.
What Habs wanted:
To keep Marky, but without too much risk. Cap was an issue not money. I think they were willing to spend the actual 12 Mil, but were not willing to go beyond 2 years due to Marky's history.
So everybody wins.
If I was PG, I would have started the talks off with 'What's the min you want for the rest of your career? Knowing that number, then you talk number of years.
Spacek traded for a late draft pick or sent down. He won't be that hard to get rid of. Close to the cap but that is a good team, I think.
I think that's more of a personal wish than it is of an expectation. I would have no problem giving Spacek's money to Wiz, but I just don't think it'll happen. We could end up signing a depth D like we did with Picard last year, but not sure we'll use 4M on an extra D if Spacek remains here.
If he's moved, then it might happen but until then I'd be surprised if there was an addition to the top 4 Ds.

Erik Cole maybe 5 years ago. The guy played for a UFA contract and he doesn't play the same aggressive game, I would rather put 3 million to Leino and as good as Bieksa was in the playoffs, he really disappeared against the Bruins. Give Pitkanen that money, he is also only 28. Clarkson in NJ is supposedly on the block, try to add him in trade over Cole.
Wished it was longer even despite the injuries but I'm still very happy about this deal.
I think the length is a major concession to the team. If he has two good seasons, the Habs will be more than happy to pay market value for him. The bane of the NHL right now is ridiculous long-term contracts. If the Habs and Markov can show good faith to each other the way Lidstrom and Detroit have- short term deals at good cash hits and also no bs extra years where the hit and the salary have nothing to do with each other. Lidstrom gets paid generously for playing. Markov doing a two year deal is actually, to my mind, a sign of just how deep his commitment to Montreal is. He could've gotten a lot more than 11.5 million total on the open market. Friggin Komi got way more than that.
Assuming it's true, of course. Tony's been very reliable about these kind of scoops, so I buy it. He's not McKenzie, but when he gives specifics, he's always been right to my knowledge.

Bieksa and Pitkanen are two very different type of players... we need a physical defensive defenceman who can play with Markov... Pitkanen doesn't fit the bill. That would be a Gainey type move signing all same-type defencemen...
I have NO idea why folks are penciling Bieksa in our top 4.
The guy is ****ing TERRIBLE.
Have you guys not watched ANY Vancouver games?
We have better guys in our system than that guy any day of the week.
And at 5M a year? What's wrong with you???
Do you want another Hamrlik type deal with a guy who's the equal to Karl Dykhuis?
He was terrible once Hamhuis got hurt, if you're paying over $4 million a year the player should be able to play with almost anyone and still be effective.
