Right now, with the team this close, is not to the time to be rebuilding the farm system using NHL talent.
I'm not sure how close they are.....quantify it? Can they win a cup in two years? Holmgren may be looking at the Meltzer argument of maybe snagging an NHL ready prospect like a Landeskog and maybe some that can be ready in a couple of years at the least so that you can extend your window. More ways than one to slice it...I wouldn't term it to the extreme of rebuilding but of restructuring the framework. Not an easy task though....hence why Holmgren finds himself at a critical junction of his GM career where he needs to balance winning now with ensuring some kind of competitive future for the Flyers within the constraints of the cap...
you can have a top end prospect pool and still be consitered a strong playoff team. Just take a look at Pittsburgh and Washington.
The Rangers have a strong group as well. Our prospect pool is a joke. It is possible to build up the prospect pool yet stay in the Cup contender ranks.
There is a way to win the cup while not depleting your farm system..... Thats what most teams do.
Yes, but once it's spilled all over the floor it's tough to get it back in the bottle without detrimental effect. Rebuilding is the same thing as buying stocks. Some will work out... some will not.

They're pretty close, IMO. They were one of the best teams in the NHL this year, they just had injury problems and lost their mojo a bit down the stretch.

This is one of the stupidest statements I have ever heard. It's like a politician who increases spending and says we need to decrease spending. Holmgren is the idiot that keeps trading away the picks like they are worthless, and yet says we need to stop trading away picks.
