Poll: Did we get better after the moves today?

Simple Question, do you think we got better or worse by moving richards, carter and signing bryzgalov... and picking up the pieces they got back.

At first my reaction was sickness in my guts when Richards was gone today - I understand the Carter deal... I don't like it, but I understand.

I can't say yes or no right now, untill I sit back and try to view this as a Flyers fan who is unharmed in today's trades.

I think in the long run, perhaps...

I am blown away to be honest.

It took me a long time to post after finding out.

Worse next year. Might be good cap management in two to three years time, but we could have signed Bryzgalov by trading far less, if anything at all. If you mean are we a better team with Bryzgalov instead of Carter and Richards, I still say worse. The difference in the number of goals that Bryzgalov will stop over the course of a season vs an average starting goaltender is in the ball park of 30-50 per year. So in a straight up deal, I would estimate that Carter + Boucher is probably about as good as having Bryzgalov + Simmonds. Voracek is no where near as good as Richards, and Schenn + the 8th overall wont pan out for a while.

In the immediate future, no.

In the medium-long term, yes.

Yeah, this.

Bryz signing makes it hard to vote No but I wouldn't say Philly "won" either of the trades.

Not in the immediate or short term.

In the long term, who knows? Bryzgalov could suffer a long term injury a la DiPietro. Schenn could top out at Nodl (highly doubtful, but he's unproven). The 8th overall pick could be a bust.

I said yes, but that is a very very cautious yes. We won't be able to tell until the season starts, but I think they will be bale to replace Carter and Richards's production, it will just be spread out more. Not one of those guys they brought in will do it alone, but Simmonds, Voracek, Schenn, and potentially someone else they get should be able to make up for the loss, not to mention other players on the team stepping up. That's a lot of ifs though. I miss Richards already.

Right now we are worse. The Cup window that was open has been shut.

Long term...hopefully better? Bryz will be again, Timonen and Pronger will be ancient or retired, and we better pray that the players we receive develop damned well.

Such a surprise... the Carter trade makes a lot of sense, something had to give to improve in net and Bryzgalov has been very good.

Holmgren just put a whole lot of pressure on Brayden Schenn though, hopefully he can reach his ceiling for you guys.

With 4-5 more forwards and maybe 1 more D to sign... does anyone think Holmgren is done? Or is one of Coburn, Hartnell or Versteeg still gone?

We didnt trade Richards and Carter so we would sign Bryzgalov.

I guarantee Carter and Richards would have been dealt regardless of whether we signed Bryz.

I think the team is worse right now, but after free agency, we will be a better team than we were yesterday.

You're not replacing the production of both of them with what we got.

My real issue, though, is defense. We just lost our best two defensive forwards...now who's going to draw the difficult shutdown and PK minutes?

What makes you feel that way?

We need all our cap space to sign the big RFAs we have. You sign Simmonds and Voracek, and probably Leino, and that 7.6 mill we have is gone. The team we have right now is probably the team we're getting unless we package something to move up in the draft.

Agreed. One thing though, I don't know if we'll ever fully know how fractured our locker room and road chemistry was last season. This could be addition by subtraction for all we really know. I'm still shocked at the Richards deal but I like the players we got back a lot. For the record I despise Brad Richards, guy's a dick.

So you finally get a goalie that might make a difference, then Carter & Richards get moved...Might as well drop Pronger too, since he'll be retired before this move works...Good luck.

The Flyers are like a patient after intense chemotherapy.

We are in a weakened state... but the cancer is gone.

Powe and Betts formed one pairing

I assume Versteeg and Giroux will form the other pairing.

As far as shutdown line, good luck, I have no clue.

Was Richards a cancer?

I really don't understand that trade.

its a matter of numbers

Salary Cap rises 4.9 mill
Carts+Richie 10.75
Zherdev 2.0
Leighton 1.55
Boosh 0.925
Shelley 1.1
Walker 1.7
Boynton .50
Lappy
-----------------------
thats like 24.592 mill right there

Bryz 5.667 mill
Leino ~ 3 mill raise
Simmonds ~ 2
Voracek ~ 2
Powe, Carcillo, Nodl raises .. maybe 1 mill total there
----------------------
thats 13.667 mill in new added expenses

Yes, you are.

We only have like 7.6 to spend, without re-signing anyone.

That cap room doesn't win you Stanley Cups. Ask the Rangers.

I would withold judgement until all your offseason moves are complete. I'm not a huge fan at sacrificing top players at the expense of a goalie. Having Huet will do that to you but Brzy seems to ge the real deal. We are not privy to everything going on with the team but some positive moves may still be coming.
