My thoughts, Many of you are looking at this as a mountian to climb. Your team looks better every day. Finished strong and will make playoffs this year. I watched a lot these past two years. They are pesty. That is a compliment!

I don't see any chance of us making the playoffs any time soon with this.
It's cute how every year people put the habs at the bottom of their conference yet they always seem to make the playoffs

Yet so many people are behind it?
because most can see beyond the leafs and are happy to do what they would think is best for the league and Hockey as a whole, and imo this is exactly what I would have wanted from the league for the past 5 years.

I just dont see that as being the case. All this format ensures is that we'll see little variation in playoff teams year after year. Not to mention the same teams meeting up in the post season all the time.

A simpler (and more reasonable) solution is to simply keep the format we have now, while switching a few teams between conferences as I mentioned earlier.

I imagine it'd be something along the lines of:

Pacific:
San Jose
Los Angeles
Anaheim
Phoenix
Dallas
Vancouver
Colorado

Midwest:
Edmonton
Calgary
Minnesota
Nashville
St. Louis
Chicago
Winnipeg

East:
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal
Buffalo
Boston
Detroit
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia

South:
Columbus
Florida
Tampa Bay
Washington
Carolina
New York Rangers
New York Islanders
New Jersey

...that's the best I can do in making sense of this idea.

One of the Jackets and Wings has to stay West, obviously.
Not necessarily. Put Columbus and the Red Wings in the east, along with Washington, and then move Philly and Pitts to the south. I haven't looked at map so I have no idea how much travel would be involved for those two, but it sure helps the Leafs alot. Or put Columbus in the Midwest. Even better.

This is the Group of Death!!!

At least sub out Detroit, Pens & Flyers with Rangers, Blue Jackets & Islanders - to even it out.

East:
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal
Buffalo
Boston
NY Rangers
NY Islanders
Columbus

South:
Florida
Tampa Bay
Washington
Carolina
Detroit
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
New Jersey

Yea, I am sure I will be happy for hockey as a whole if my team keeps missing the playoffs year after year after year.

Good f**king Lord!

Just leave well enough alone and only switch the two most logical teams, those being Nashville (to the Southeast) and Winnipeg (to the Central).

There's no need for all of the other extraneous BS to happen.

The fact that even a few here like this idea is downright terrifying. Divisional PlayOffs? Top four in each division makes the PlayOffs? That's terrible. It should be the top eight in each conference make it with the two division winners getting top seeds. The four divisions is fine, the rest is the problem.

what i wouldnt mind if they did the 2 conference 2 divisions but if they did top 2 from each division make it but the division are given 2 cross overs maning in the end the divisions could be 2 teams from one 6 from the other making it more of a conference rather then division thing

If its a balanced schedule then it doesn't matter which team is in each division.

It does matter which teams are in which division, if the top 4 teams from each division qualify for the playoffs if this is really the new Leafs division.

East:
Toronto
Ottawa
Montreal
Buffalo
Boston
Detroit
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia

Hawks have no rivalries with Winnipeg/Edmonton/Calgary or the Wild ,,, That division would suck

Better version

Central

Detroit
Chicago
St Louis
Nashville
Dallas
Minnesota
Winnipeg

I don't get all the "we're screwed" crap. We're trying to build a contender. We're not there yet - we need a top centre, probably another top 6, a couple of bottom 6, and a pmd. But as the pieces come together - we're going to be a strong team - able to compete with Detroits and Phillies of the league.

We'll get better year over year until we're there - and when we're there, the way Burke is doing it - we'll have the organizational depth to sustain it.

I don't want to make the playoffs because we have a weak division - I want to make the playoffs because we have a good team. If that takes an extra year - so be it.

Playing a lot of games against better competition only helps when you do finally make it. It makes you're players better.

Loser mentality.

To win you have to beat the best teams at some point anyway.

Divisional playoffs would be awesome, too bad this proposal is only one round of divisional playoffs. The conference finals should be the two divisional winners squaring off.

Seeing as Detroit specifically asked to be with Toronto and Montreal that ain't happening. Besides, that's geographically insane; how is Detroit in the "South"? They're further north than Columbus!

Um, that's the point. Know why Boston and Montreal have such hatred for each other? Because prior to the current format, the two teams usually finished 1-2 in the Adams division and met repeatedly in the second round. The "Battle of Ontario" rivalry was ramped up because Toronto and Ottawa kept running into each other.

And whining about dominant teams in the division is meaningless. 5 years ago, Pittsburgh was the NHL's laughingstock.

Bring it! God forbid the Leafs playing in a tough division that would force them to ice a GOOD hockey team to contend for the Cup. Why are Leaf fans afraid? We have one of the brightest GMs in hockey, right? Competition is good. As the old adage goes "Hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by Turkeys"...besides sports teams go in waves...Teams will have their ups and downs. Its not like the Wings, Pens, Flyers and Bruins will always be top contenders....At some point rebuilding happens on every squad.

why Detroit in the South? why not Toronto if you're just going to plunk teams in a division that makes no sense?

go look at a map, and look for Detroit. I'll give you hint, its one of the most northern teams in the US
