I'm a huge fan of Philips, knows what it takes to win and putting up 95 in 67 then 24 in 17 playoff games is no easy task. I think he could work out very well here...

i'm not expecting anything in terms of trade. With the first round victory last season, and playing Vancouver tough, I think Poile will be very reluctant to change anything that he doesn't have to and instead rely on the continued improvement of a young roster and making savvy depth replacements where necessary (Ward?, O'Brien?).

unrelated, I've been looking at 7 round mock drafts... one had the Preds drafting C, C, C, D, G, C, L... the guy must think Poile has been stricken with mad cow or something.

This is why I love this organization. IMO, this is how a team should be operated. I know it makes for boring trade deadlines (holy crap Philly!! ), but it doesn't make for boring playoffs.

I don't advocate a wholesale change, but I do think weaknesses were exposed last season. We hung on by the seat of our pants vs Vancouver, and likely lost the series due to how bad our PP was. I don't think another year for CW, SK, PH, etc will automatically fix that. I don't think we need to change A LOT, but I do think we need more offense in the top six, and from what Poile has said, he agrees. There's not much to get on the FA market, so it would likely come via trade.

But...this is the draft thread, that's probably conversation for the off season thread.

I'll reiterate, names I'd like to see us pick up, in order of preference:

Catenacci
Ambroz
Jurco
Prince
Rask
McColgan
Rask
Jacobs

So I think my hockey knowledge has grown dramatically over the past five years or so. I went from just a casual fan early on (was merely a casual fan for probably 13-14 years) to understanding all of the rules and being able to see calls before they're announced (and seeing missed calls) to understanding strategies and important roles that are easy to overlook(more recently). An area I'm severely lacking is knowledge of up-and-coming prospects. Anyone willing to at least point me in the right direction to start boning up? I'm a bit late for this draft, but anything I can use for future reference would be awesome. Also, anyone planning on being around during the draft tonight? Doesn't seem like something people will be watching at the bars, and I'd like to get a little discussion going if possible

http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=44969 This is about as good as it gets. Lots of great summaries there from reliable sources.

Nice, thanks. Any sites that compile stats throughout the season for likely entries into the draft? Something I can use starting next year

i typically start watching and following draft prospects a full year before, but you definitely don't have to do that. If you follow the prospects board here at HF, you'll get some decent feedback from a lot of people who see these guys on a nightly basis. The rankings from various bureaus are posted, and from there you can kind of start whittling down the field. I don't bother a whole lot with late-round guys, but I typically have a good knowledge of the top 90 or so.

When Bettman said the words "Craig Leopold", I literally cringed.

Amazing that there have been basically no trades yet. No picks at least.

There is a rumor right now that Ellis is going to Boston for the #9 overall. We will see soon. If it's in a plan to use for a roster forward Poile better have a deal already set up. Otherwise it'll be interesting to see who we get if the trade happens
