As much as I like Smyth... makes zero sense on the Flames with their current cap and winger situation + re-signing Tanguay should be priority one.

It's remarkable that the Oilers won't part with some late picks and get him back, but as a Kings fan, it doesn't matter to me, just sad that Smyth, a true class act, can't go back to where he loves most to play out his career. Oh well, finish it up and let's go hunt some more top 6 players in LA!

Tambellini is thinking with his head, and not the fans tears.

Meh.. Unless a deal with CGY goes down today, Smyth will be an Oiler. Im sure a deal has all been worked out but will not be announced because our management does not want to ruin the moment for the other Ryan.

Feaster trolling the Oilers at the expense of signing useful FA's

seriously, they looking to become the oldest team in the league?

As an Oiler fan.. i want Smyth just cause the price would be low and we need some vets. I really don't care if he goes somewhere else or not.

As a Flames fan... i would be wondering what kind of drugs my gm is smoking. It's like they have no direction for that franchise at all.

Absolute joke. Tambellini is a piece of trash if Calgary isn't giving up much.

I'd actually be pretty happy if the Flames got him for next to nothing. It does likely mean that Tanguay is on his way out but if this is the plan B I'm not completely upset as Feaster would have done his best to try and keep him. While his cap hit isn't ideal his salary is lower so maybe that will allow the team to bury a contract that otherwise the owners wouldn't have been so inclined too (can't blame them when you have Kotalik making 3M in the A last year and still missed out) so I'm not so sure if it's as easy to look at it as a 6M+ cap hit.

Otherwise there's not a huge risk having a 1 year deal, it allows them to maybe try and compete this year before seeing where they stand next season when the real decision to rebuild would occur (given how many contracts start to expire). I do think it's an indication that the Flames don't have high hopes with the UFA though, probably those they want would look for greener pastures and they don't got faith in the "second" tier UFA's to fill any other holes so going to be a boring UFA frenzy for us Flames fans.

I'm waiting to get my panties in a knot until I hear that Smyth waives his NMC. They may be close, but that doesn't mean he waives it. Doesn't mean he doesn't either.

Smyth

If this indeed is the case...
Feaster isn't making the best first impression!
Even in his hay day Ryan wasn't worth his current salary.
I really hope there is a plan we aren't aware of.

Im not even a Vancouver fan per say but they did outscore the Flames 25-13 in the series this year..and only lost 1 game in OT so they only missed out on 1 point of sweeping them for teh year

would you pay $4.5 million dollars for a 'mentor'? This is also a business.
Oilers are going nowhere this season and unless they are struggling to hit the cap floor there is really no need to add Smyth for a year.

Smyth will be a welcome addition to Oilers club in a year when he is making half of this year's salary and 1/3 the cap hit.

One of two things is happening:

Feaster thinks he can sign Tanguay and still have Smyth. He's attempting something for next season while moving out Regehr (and likley signing a lesser FA defensemen) for assets to help the team in the future. Smyth gives Calgary depth and a net presence on the powerplay.

Feaster is starting to lose hope of signing Tanguay but is still unwilling to trade Iginla, which I'm not a fan of. With Langkow/Backlund/Glencross as his linemates, Iginla is going to be wasted on this team. So he figures Smyth and his expiring deal is as good as it'll get. He'll give up a 4th or a 6th now, and trade Smyth at the deadline for a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I just don't understand how Feaster would be willing to take on Smyth and give up our pick. L.A should be the one adding a pick/prospect for us to take Smyth off of their hands.

Actually it makes perfect sense if you look at a our cap situation AFTER this year.

If this deal become done it obvious that Tanguay was looking for a 4+ year contract with a cap hit of 4.5M+.

Ryan Smyth's cap hit is high although it is only for one season, and he can fill in as a stop gap top six winger for that duration of time.

After this upcoming season we have big ticket contracts coming of the books,

If this trade went through FOR EXAMPLE.

Ryan Smyth
Daymond Langkow
Cory Sarich
Olli Jokinen
Niklas Hagman
Ales Kotalik

EACH OF THOSE CONTRACTS EXPIRE AFTER THIS YEAR.

Which in itself is 22.5 Million dollars to SPEND in forwards after next year.

Smyth still has a NMC, and demanded to be traded for family reasons.

Personally, I think that Feaster knows Tanguay is playing the market, and this is his backup plan.

Smyth for Tanguay and Regher?

Maybe the real plan is for Nail Yak.

It makes perfect sense for Smyth to go to the Oilers. Young team in need for veteran leadership, and he belongs there.

Smyth to the Flames makes literally no sense at all however. That team has been making terrible moves for the past 2 years.

Seriously why is the league banding together to help out LA all of a sudden. Maybe they're trying to fix the playoffs and bet on the underdog. :sarcasm
