More late firsts will be worse than Brouwer than better. Obviously you have a better chance to hit a home run by keeping the first but if your scouting staff doesn't have an inside read on anyone (especially a weaker draft like this), than playing it safe with an established, improving player is not a horrible idea.

I could see Brouwer putting up 25-25 for the next 3-5 seasons in Washington. I can't say the same for a fair number of guys apt to be drafted in that ballpark.

Setoguchi, Coyle, 28th to Minn for Brent Burns and a 2nd.

Setoguchi just signed for three years two days ago.

SJ just got a Mini Doughty.

We need to one up them and get a top line winger.

Poor McNeill is already balding at 18.

they needed a top pairing defender, and they did just that. With the emergence of Couture, Thornton being dealt would not surprise me next year for another good defender or a 1st line winger.

I think that is fantastic value if this Coyle guy is any good.

The real question is, how much of a dick is Doug Wilson?

Yeah, I feel the same way to a point, but Minnesota had no choice, Burns would leave after next season.

We could have taken Rattie or Puempel with this pick.

Coyle is pretty damn good. Big, strong forward with good skating and hands. His cousin is Tony Amonte by the way.

I think this trade is good for both teams. San Jose needed D and Minnesota needs both but definitely needs forwards.

Burns is inconsistent though. Interesting to see what they have to pony up to sign him too.

San Jose still has to sign Burns. He is a UFA next year. Burns will command a hefty salary even for how inconsistent he is.

No different than when DL traded Lubo after signing him to an extension.
