the scouting reports I am reading on him make me like him more and more. a real leader, team player, will do anything to win type player who will hit, block shots, fight and is a very good skater who can score and contribute offense.

That Biggs bleeds red, white and blue despite holding dual U.S./Canada citizenship (his parents are Canadian) is one reason why he was a unanimous choice as captain for the USNTDP's U-18 team this season.

He will be tougher than Brown according to scouting reports, coaches had to tell him to stop fighting so much.

Yeah that will not be such a problem on a Burke team.
Sounds like he could be a guy to make room for guys like Kadri and McKegg in a few years.

He is good defensively by the sounds of it too.

This is exactly who I was hoping we'd pick. We need a guy like him. I don't get the Armstrong comparison that TSN showed though, I think he'll be quite a bit tougher and possibly more offensively talented than Armstrong is. Army is more of a 3rd liner and I think bigs has top 6 potential. Then again, Army may have been seen as a top 6er in his draft year too considering he went around the same spot as Biggs.

Brown is a bad comparison, I doubt Biggs dives like a dolphin.

Few points.

I love this pick. While everyone says lol fighter and or whatever predictable, yes he may be a great fighter and hitter but he has skills.

One of the biggest things when it comes to big pf types is that they are not good skaters like lucic in his draft year (he worked hard to improve it). But biggs is a good skater with good powerful strides, he also has good hands.

Also, either Ducks or pens would of taken him. His average ranking was 15, and at one point was ranked 5th by css or iss. So what would of happened if Burke didn't trade up for this pick would be:

Ducks/Pens draft Biggs, and as Leafs are getting ready to draft Puempel, murray trades for 24th as he did and takes Puempel and WE DON'T GET EITHER.

Puempel would of been there at 25, the only reason Murray traded for 24 is because he KNEW leafs would of picked him at 25.

I wasn't necessarily a big fan of it either. In terms of the USHL, on an under 18 team where the oldest players were 1993 birthdays (Biggs' age) he finished 12th among forwards in points behind a number of 15 and 16 year olds.

I was hoping when we traded to 22 that we would take Puempel as well. Bob Mackenzie describes Puempel as the best pure goal scorer in the draft. He described Biggs as the best fighter in the first round.

Toronto is not among the league's best for top six forwards, and our prospect pool up front is not exactly full of top end talent up front, as likely Colborne and Kadri are the only two (perhaps McKegg) who are expected to one day play on the first two lines.

I do agree that it will be nice to eventually see a third line made up of players suited to play that role, as opposed to players who have failed to make a top six role, but whether or not it was worth it to trade up and spend our first pick in the draft I suppose we will have to wait for.

Biggs, Ross, Frattin, Kenny Ryan, D'amigo

I love our 2nd-3rd line prospects, most of these guys should make it to the show, the Leafs are truly becoming a truculent, Burke-type team.

Hopefully, he'll stick his big ass in the front of the net, let Kadri dangle and dance and just serve one up for him to slam home for a goal.

What is Biggs offensive potential?

Is it more comparable to Kassian/ Kreider or Brad Ross?

I am interested in their development as well. I do not know a lot about the USDP, but it will be interesting to see how Biggs' game translates. Ryan has made a name for himself being one the better shutdown wingers in the OHL.

Here is how their USDP stats measure up:

Tyler Biggs USDP
13 GP 1G 1A 2 points (16 year old)
55 GP 19G 12A 31 points (17 year old)

Kenny Ryan USDP
49 GP 10G 13A 23 points (16 year old)
62 GP 27G 22A 49 points (17 year old)

Here's a bit from Hockey Prospect:

"We love his compete level, as Biggs hates losing a board battle let alone a hockey game. He has
the ability to take over a game when he is on. When he brings his full blown nastiness he is just
plain fun to watch. Biggs is a very coachable prospect who oozes upside and could easily be a
top 20 pick."

I hate this Biggs pick. Not a fan at all.

Toronto didn't need a bruising 3rd line winger, they needed a skilled player capable of playing in the top 6.

I makes me even more angry that Burke gave up a solid 2nd round pick (39th) to move up to get Biggs.

He should've sat tight and took the best player available or traded up to get a player like McNeil (big skilled center)

He passed over players like Puempel, Rattie, Phillips, Namestnikov and even Grimaldi who have good offensive futures for another 3rd liner who's compared to Colby Armstrong.

In the process he dealt the 2nd round pick where we could have selected Percy (not worth 25th), Ritchie, Saad, Rask, Mayfield, Catenacci, Jenner or any other player who fell to him.

Terrible, terrible, terrible first round for the Maple Leafs.

Now we have to wait until the 3rd round (86th) to pick.

Stupid Burke is destroying this franchise with his stubborness to draft tough players over skilled. If he wanted to go this truculent route then I have no clue why he traded for Kessel.

Those are big words.
Exactly what we are missing from our Lineup. Burke wanted Kassian, and to an extent, he got him. (or someone similar)

Lucic in his draft year:

62 GP 9 G 10 A 19 points (17 year old)

Even at 16 in the BCHL his numbers weren't dominant, 23 points in 50 games.

I think the more important thing is the grit, compete level and coachability. The offensive potential can be tapped into.
