Sabres Selection, #76 Overall Daniel Catenacci C

Daniel Catenacci
POSITION: Centre
SHOOTS: Left
TEAM: Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)
BORN: March 9, 1993
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 180 Lbs

Future Considerations writeup:

Quote:
SCOUTING REPORT: A small but very quick forward who makes contributions on both sides of the puck.
Has explosive speed and handles the puck very well at top gear. Not only that but he has a very quick stick
and dynamic hands that allow him to maintain possession of the puck through tight areas. Not physically
strong and can get out muscled along the wall but is ever willing to fight it out and battle no matter the size
of his opponent. Has good balance, with a wide based stride as well as elusiveness because of his quick
pivots and turns. Always involved in the play and has a good steady work rate. His shot is very quick off the
blade and pin point accurate. Sees the ice well and makes nice soft tape-to-tape passes. Has some solid
defensive abilities like getting in lanes and causing havoc with an active stick. Can be a little selfish with
the puck, trying to do too much on his own. Offensive potential is only real question mark for the next level,
some project him as more of a solid PK and grinder than scoring threat going forward.
NHL POTENTIAL: Third line two-way forward.
FAST:

Another small, speedy center to replace the lost Byron, perhaps.
Questionable offensive upside.

Pretty good value pick. Was expected to go 2nd round. Read comparisons to Darren Helm.

Should still be a solid pro. Competitive and fast.

I like the pick. Never hurts picking a player with blazing speed. And he's no pansy either. He plays with an edge.

OK, a centerman. Not too big in size, but quick. Don't know much about him, but he sounds solid.

So, a blazing fast smallish guy with brass ones.

That actually projects to center.

Not unhappy with the pick at all.

really love this pick...cant believe he fell to 77.

ISS rated 20th...not concerned with his height, seems like he can still get up to 195 or so. well done Darcy.

I like him. We certainly needed a center, and he may grow a couple more inches.

Even if he doesn't grow a couple inches, he'll chew through a guy to make the exchange more even. Clearly a kid who is a size of the fight type, not a size of the dog.

Is he style-wise similar to Byron? A quick, gritty, small center who relies on a good motor?

seems like he is someone that just needs to figure out how to consistently use his speed. though his statistics are very close to some of the first round picks that we were looking at.

Faster than Byron but really competitive and gritty akin to Byron, yeah.

Byrons 170lbs was generous, Catenacci could reasonably get to 190-195..similar motors, yes, different builds.

I see people comparing him to be a Darren Helm type player. Living in Michigan and constantly watching the Wings, I can tell you that is a very good thing. It would be great to have a player like him on the team.

Yeah, and he has decent weight on him for a young kid that height. If he can fill out and play closer to 200 pounds, he'd be really solid.

The Scouting Report's look at him, year-end:

Quote:
59. LC Daniel Catenacci – Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)

DOB: Feb. 09/93 | Shoots: L | Height: 5.10 | Weight: 185lbs
Midterm Rank: 36 | League Rank: 17th OHL | Country Rank: 25th Canada

Catenacci’s fall in our rankings is more a symptom of other players moving ahead of him rather than faults of his own. After a bit of a disappointing first year in the OHL, Catenacci took a more offensive role with the Greyhounds this season and showed more of an ability to create opportunities when he’s on the ice. Catenacci’s issue for us comes down to defining what type of a role he can have at the next level. He’s a good defensive player and tenacious center at this level, but how much will that translate to the NHL given his size? We’re not sure he has enough offense to be a Top 6 guy, which makes him a bit of a tweener in our eyes.

With how they've filled out guys like Gerbe, Ennis and Byron... at 195ish, Catenacci would be a bowling ball out there.

Catenacci is flourishing as a leader on the Greyhounds squad this season and displaying the skills that tempted management to select him as a first overall pick. His intriguing combination of speed, puck handling and play making prowess project him to be a top-two centre at the NHL level who likens himself to Sidney Crosby, but is often compared to Peter Forsberg. He has excellent acceleration and can move from point A to point B very quickly and efficiently.

In an interview with The Hockey News in the fall of 2008, Catenacci stated that, “Speed is my top skill,” he said. “I think I have pretty good vision, too.”

At worst, he will become a borderline first line centre similar to Nashville’s Matthew Lombardi, who in his own right has sublime speed and creative skills.

Although he may lack in size – generously listed at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds – Catenacci compensates by competing hard and going to the dirty areas on the ice. He is also described by his teammates as a natural leader who is confident in his abilities and will do anything for his team to win.

Currently ranked 17th overall among North American skaters by the ISS for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, Catenacci is likely to rise even higher up the rankings after winning the fastest skater competition at the Top Prospects Game in January. Scouts view his passion for the game and work ethic on-and-off the ice as an important quality that will help him translate to the pro game.

Thanks, guys. I know how player comparisons are verboten, I was wondering if he filled a similar niche in the organization.
