Round 6: Pick #172 (Peter Ceresnak, D)

Player: Peter Ceresnak

DEFENSEMAN
SHOOTS: RIGHT
HEIGHT: 6' 3"
WEIGHT: 209
BORN: JANUARY 26, 1993
BORN IN: TRENCIN, SVK
DRAFTED: NYR (6TH ROUND / 172ND OVERALL)

Stats:

2010-2011 Trencin Jr. SLOVAKIA-JR.23 1G 3A 4P 16

Notable Reports:

(Future Considerations)

Scouting Report: Big physical stay-at-home defender…has decent skating ability but has just average speed…is quicker than you would think in his transitional turns and pivots…not much offensive upside here although he makes a solid first pass…at his best when keeping his game simple but can get caught running around in his zone…needs further refinement in proper defensive positioing…extremely physical and likes to line up attacking forwards for the big hit…clears the front of the net effectivly and is hard to play against along the wall.

Notes: Has moved around a bit this season but has continued his strong defensive physical role with each squad he has suited up with. Has improved his skating from last year and looks stronger as well. Should be effective in a physical defensive shut-down role for the Slovak’s

Nashville trades 172 to NYR for 6th round pick in 2012. Rangers select Slovakian D Peter Ceresnak.

Dunno how to see this pick, isnt 2012 the deeper draft?

Rangers swap sixth-rounders, theirs next year for Predators' this year and use it to take Slovakian D Peter Ceresnak at No. 172.

I kinda feel like that applies more to the first few rounds. Should be easy enough to move into the late rounds next year if we see someone we want. Ceresnak was ranked 35th among European skaters, guess they felt he was worth the shot.

Don't know much about him other than he looks like solid value in the 6th.

Do we have all our picks next year (except for our 6th rounder)?

Another solid defensive defenseman who plays a rough, hard-nosed style.

McIlrath
Valentenko
Pashnin
Noreau
Ceresnak
Kundratek

All have that same similarity, they are all tough to play against.

Speaking of Kundratek, is this a pick like that? Big kid who needs some refinement but projects as a solid stay-at home hard-hitting d-man.

I assume they had a much higher grade (3rd round?) on this kid and decided to move a 2012 pick for him. Isn't Gaborik from Trencin?

He's already playing for the men's team in Dukla Trencin.

Might be a deeper draft, but that only means the first couple of rounds. It's a crapshoot after that every year.

Alright trade I guess. Next year is better but I doubt the sixth's are too much different. Maybe we had this guy ranked much higher and pulled the trigger.

A sixth is a sixth is a sixth. Once you get past the first two or three rounds, drafts become very similar.

And, if they feel the need to get a 6th round pick next year, I don't doubt they'll find a way to do so.

Hey, Valuable post. Thanks

As for this kid.I know the Slovak pool dried up but you still can find a guy or two who can be a steal. Is this kid that? I doubt it.

But this kid has SOME kind of skill and a 6th rounder? OK. I dont know ANYTHING about him but I know our scouts do. And if they feel losing a 6th round pick in a draft class year where elite prospects will be pushing down good but not elite players, than they must feel they got good investment for their pick. So based on that, I am a fan I guess.

If he pans out, will be worth it. Everyone loves big d than can hit. Although my MAIN concern to be quite frank is if a D-man's best skill is hitting and the league is making it harder and harder for the D-Men to actually HIT it might be a worthless skill in the next 4-6 years. The rules 41 and 48 (I believe those are the two rules for fighting) are making it harder and harder to line up a player. And if you use your shoulder and you are a bigger guy, you will be blasting the face/head of a smaller player 9 times out of 10. Unless you really try to hit his shoulder.. its very hard at the speed of todays game. So I hope this kid improves something else other than hitting hard.

But again, our scouting is really REALLY good. So kudo's to them for getting a player they really wanted (traded next years pick for him).

Sather must figure with the new rules you will need a stable of these guys available for duty. A couple get suspended, you just send a twitter to the next guy!
