Big and incredibly tough, one of the best 17 year old fighters I've seen in a while. Doubtful he can play at the next level though.

So, we clearly were looking to add some size this year (except Cousins). Next Riley Cote?

“I just do what I need to do to protect my teammates when necessary. As an enforcer, when you do what you need to do at certain times it gets the team into games,” he explains.
Mathers used his Oct. 14 dance against six-foot seven-inch 227-pound Sarnia Sting Kyle Flemington as an example. The Petes trailed the Sting 1-0 and Mathers sparked the Petes and the crowd with a spirited tussle with Flemington. The Petes followed with three straight goals and eventually won the contest 5-4.
“You have to pick your spots because you don’t want to be fighting when you’re up 3-1 and your at their home barn. Even if the guy loses it still pumps up their crowd and it gets their team riled up to,” Mathers says.
A defenceman his entire hockey career, Mathers was told on the first day of camp that he would being playing forward."

He's a beast. Hopefully he can work on his game and be a Flyers enforcer for years to come.

At least time we waited till the 7th round to draft a goon, instead of say the third round like other years. I don't mind it. Clackson sucked and was traded, Rinaldo will be NHLer in a year or two, Klotz lost fights before they began and almost died fighting. The goon cupboard is pretty much bare.

Compares himself to Milan Lucic.

http://dansallows.com/interview-derek-mathers/

Quote:
Who has been your biggest influence and help in developing your game thus far?

Derek: Honestly there isn’t one exact person, I would say all of my coachs and my family have played an integral part in my development.
You are a big, strong player, that made you mark on heavy weights in the OHL this season.

Aside from fighting, what do you feel your best attributes are, and what would you like to improve on going forward?

Derek: I would say I am a great leader in the dressing room, and have a lot of respect from my teammates. I work hard on the ice, and usually get the job done that I was sent out to do. I have a heavy shot, and am very physical. One thing I need to work on would be my skating.

Is there an NHLer you mold your game after?

Derek: I would say Milan Lucic from the Boston Bruins.

Common theme, a month after letting our top two prospects go (Bertilsson and Eriksson), the Flyers do not take a single European.

Wouldn't be a draft without the Flyers taking a goon.

He isn't the first Flyer prospect to destroy Terreri. Rinaldo destroyed him as well if memory serves correctly

I really don't see the point in drafting fighters. I mean whats the point. You can pick them up as un-drafted free agents. Why not take a risk on some guy that shows some skill. Detroit are a testament to this. Sometimes you get real lucky

Mathers gets his size from his mother Bonnie's side of the family. His uncle is NHL referee Don Van Massenhoven who is among the tallest officials at six-foot-six

great. hes related to a horrible NHL ref.

Not like Klotz at all. This guy actually gives punches more than he takes them. I watch the OHL as much as I watch the NHL, and this dude can throw them. Not the best in the league or anything, but holds his own and considering his age will likely only get better. He beat up a lot of guys 2 years older them him this year.

Considering I don't really follow undrafted players at all it's interesting that a few of these kids we drafted this year I've actually seen and remembered. I'm happy today. A good draft I think. Great way to finish off a great week.

He may compare himself to Lucic, but I'd compare him more to Stu Grimson.

Makes about as much sense as signing a goon for a 3 yr contract worth $3.3m.
