Except that Gainey sent a roster player & prospect for a 29 year old 58 point player.
Gomez is now a 38 point 31 year old player. There is a big diffence between the two. The fact that you don't realize that is lol.
31 is not old for a hockey player. Look at UFA's that are 30-31-32 they all get big money and term...not 1 year deals at reduced rates, because GM's know they usually have 4-5 years in the tank.
Phoenix must really be pressing to not be a doormat to have any interest in Gomez. He's the last guy I'd take on without getting some goods along with that dead cap space.

Show me a 31 year old UFA that got big money for a 38 point season.
FYI there were 57 centres in the league who had more points than Gomez last year. There were also a lot of centres below him in scoring that I would take over Gomez in a heart beat. He isn't as in demand as you are dreaming.

and only one of them was on Phoenix roster -> 33 yo UFA Eric Belanger with 40 pts...

It's not wether he had a good or bad year...that happens to 23, 24 and 25 year olds too...the point is that his skills are the same as when he was 31.
If Gomez was a UFA in the current market he'd get about 4.5-5 mil for 3-5 years.
Laich had his worst offenive year in his UFA year and he'll still get good money.
Phoenix doesn't seem to have a problem contract, where we could say, you take mine, and I'll take yours...
rosival? he's only got 1 year left but i can't imagine their thrilled paying him 5M$.
maybe something like this gets the conversation started:
To Phx
Gomez
Pyatt
Pouliot
To Mtl
Rosival
Markov-Rosival
Gorges-Subban
would be a solid top-4, replacing Wiz while keeping things open for next summer (room for emelin/weber to emmerge as a top-4).
phoenix takes on a big contract this year, but the next 2 are very manageable, plus they get two cheap fwds, one with top-6 potential, the other an excellent role player related to a roster player.
would force us to go out and get at least 1-2 UFA's, but free's up a solid bit of cap space to do so.
and if you're Arnott, Handzus, Connolly or Laich... are you that interested in playing for the Yotes ?
For $5m yes I am. They are a competitive team and they are 100% not ever moving to Winnipeg. The mess and worry about moving to Winnipeg is behind them.
At $5m, those players are better value than Gomez is.
I am not sure if this is going to sound completely ridiculous but after the FA period is over .. Gomez could be one of the most valuable contracts in the league .. lol
There are a lot of teams that are 20million + under the cap floor at the moment and Gomez's salary vs cap hit is a very good deal for these teams.

They've lost their goalie, though.
And their D is not getting younger.
Moving in Winnipeg is obviously not possible, but the situation is far from perfect about the future of the franchise.
Money is nice, but i dont think that the situation really changed from last year, and they werent exactly the most attractive destination.
About us, i just dont want to lose Gorges. His value for us is way bigger than his market's one, and dumping Gomez is not that much of a good move if we have to lose him in the process, because he's still an average (very average, but average) 2nd line center.

Yea but none of those guys are going to get $5m offers from any other team. Phoenix can afford to give them $5m, others can't.
Also there is a really good chance Vokoun lands in Phoenix. Only Tampa and Colorado don't have starting goalies. I don't see either of those teams giving Vokoun the term he probably wants. Phoenix wouldn't have a problem giving him a 3 year contract imo.
If I'm Maloney, I go after Tim Connolly, Jason Arnott, Michael Handzus, Brooks Laich before I give up assets for Gomez.
If I'm going to give up assets, I also would rather go after guys like TJ Oshie, Stephen Weiss, Jarret Stoll before I go after Gomez.
Most of those guys will chose a more stable situation and a contender ahead of Phoenix. Easy to say taht they should go after UFA's but if they have to pay big money for junk, might as well get a Gomez.

Then they'll be paying big money (bigger?) plus assets for junk.
