Leino is a fine defensive forward, the best on the roster now. Briere was nothing but an even-strength catastrophe until Leino was put on his wing, essentially playing center in the D-zone. His weakness is he still dallies too much on the perimeter with the puck. Last year was really his first full NHL season in terms of regular play. He still has an NHL upside. You just have to put a price on that, the lower the better.
While he's not a complete liability in his own end, I wouldnt call him a fine defensive forward. And he's certainly not the best defensive forward on the team. Powe and betts are both much More reliable defensively, and you could even argue that giroux is as well.

You could even argue that Hartnell was the best defensive player on that line. And I'm not joking.

There's reliable defensively on the PK and against other team's 4th lines and there's reliable defensively covering for your center who does most of his business setting up behind the other team's goal. Leino's a fine defensive forward.
Yeah, I know. For a guy that is supposed to be the one who crashes the net and stays there he is surprisingly sound defensively really. I think that people here often is a bit harsh on him, so I threw that last bit in there.
Also, with the many, many stupid things Hartnell can do on the ice, it can be hard to see that he's actually a really sound guy positionally.

The latter of which, leino didnt do any of. Most, if not all, of the coverage down low when that line was on the ice was done by Hartnell.
for Flyers from 2.5 to 3 as absolute max imo, i think he's gonna kill his career with going after money now when he could just stay for lesser money now and have another opportunity to cash in later.
im a big Ville-fan but id rather have Cole, Laich or even J.Jokinen for the money hes wanting. Was fun while it lasted though
IF Leino was smart he'd sign for 2.75 per..... I know he isn't going too....
Why would Leino be smart for taking less money than he will get elsewhere (or here)? I think he'll be re-signed in the $3-$3.5 million and I'd be ok with that. Not thrilled, but I like Leino and now that we have cap space that number is not as bad. Before the trades, I would have told him to go pound sand, but I'd be psyched to have him back. I don't think he deserves a cent over $3 million, but I can see him getting it. If Giroux is making $3.75 mil, and Leino is making $3.5 mil, Leino needs to give his agent a raise or Giroux needs to fire his.
I have a bad feeling that Briere will start sucking again if we don't sign Leino.
Leino was figured out. As long as they keep Hartnell with him to protect him and get in the dirty areas, then bring in a playmaker (voracek) he will play great. I was sorta hoping to see a Richards/Hartnell/Briere line but that isn't going to happen now
What had he been offered already and turned down last season? 3.0 or 3.5? The rumors are he wants 4+ and I hope we do not sign him for anything over 3.0.
I think we will sign Leino, regardless of cost. I see 3.7-4 million, or perhaps 3.5 million if he takes a 10 year plus contract. I think something like 35 million over 10 years.

I kinda agree, I still feel Leino is what made that line special. Yes he could be better on defense, and turns it over sometimes, But you cant knock him off the puck at all and he has great vision and play making capabilities. He is by far our best playmaking wing, and those guys are invaluable.
I think Tanguay's contract is a good bench mark for the Flyers to negotiate with Leino. I'd like Leino signed but only on a short term deal, 3 years tops and would go up to 3.5 avg in that range. Any longer or any higher forget it. Laich 4m avg for 5 years is more attractive.

The only time Briere sucked (offensively because he's always sucked defensively), is when he kept having groin problems, and when Stevens moved him to the wing.
