Maybe not flukey, but that speed can be misleading.

Yes, when he has time and space to glide into a slapper, it's hard. It should be. He's a man child.

But using that kind of a shot in a game situation for him NEVER happens. He takes a while to get it off and when he does, it's never accurate.

It's one area that really needs some work. He's got the smarts and frame to make it a real weapon, but it isn't right now.

So his weakness is his setup, accuracy, and maybe lateral movement with the puck, rather than his shot not being very strong.

This is a somewhat coachable skill, so he may be able to round out this aspect of his game. Especially with the increased offensive and puck handling role with Elliott and others gone next year in Saskatoon.

His in game shooting sounds like a less accurate version of Robyn Regehr.

I'm hoping this as well. Maybe the extra chances and responsibility will get him to develop more confidence in his own abilities.

I agree that an all around physical game is better. Brendan Witt was a wicked open ice hitter in junior but he got exposed a lot going for the home run too. I also suspect the rules to change in such a way that those big open ice hits are hard to make without putting your team down. I agree with RS though and think this makes the Scott Stevens comparison a little off. Pronger seems like a reach to me too. Honestly he sounds like Foote with excellent skating and that ain't a bad thing in my view.

Yep, those are all fair statements.

Keep in mind this kid is just 17 years young. He has an unbelievable amount of time to develop and get better.

I'm happy with the pick.

No knock on Siemens cause I think he'll be a descent defender, but even 28 hours after the draft I still can't believe we passed on Murphy.

I would take Brooks orpik over marc andre bergeron anytime.

To be fair that's selling one guy short and the other high. If Siemens and Murphy both completely reach potential the comparison will be much closer. Murphy is a truly gifted and dynamic offensive defensemen. I think he's got potential to throw together Mike Green type numbers...but I'd still much rather have the Brooks Orpik/Weber-Lite that Siemens could bring, just because that's exactly what we need.

I have a feeling I am going to like Siemens down the road alot. I thought for sure that if they're going BPA, then Murphy has gotta be the pick. As many people say around here though, gotta respect what the scouts are doing right now with the players they've been picking.
Colorado was really missing what Siemens could bring.

Beat me to it!

Here's a story we ran on Siemens heading into the draft:

Heads up for Siemens

Thing that impressed me most about him was how he gave up his assistant captaincy when Elliott got returned to Saskatoon in September. Stood up in the dressing room and told his teammates why Elliott should have the letter more.

Our report on him from the selection

I interpret the Stevens comments to mean that he wants to be hard to play against and he wants to learn to to be a player that initiates contact.

If it also means he'd like to cultivate his mean streak, I'm fine with that too.

Beautiful. What a team player! He is (another) guy that seems to fit the Avs' rebuild to a tee.

And what is even cooler is that him and Elliott played together back on the Blades and will on the Avalanche. Pretty neat.

ive watched him a few times, and with good development im thinking he has all of the tools and could turn into an alex edler down the road, i also think jay boumeester might be a close comparison, but i think siemens will be more punishing

I don't think Jbo and Siemens are alike at all. Bouwmeester is a considerably better skater, and is amongst the least intense and softest players in the league.

Btw Siemens was second youngest player taken in draft. 10 months younger than Adam Larsson.

Calm down Mrs Murphy. I don't think it's anything personal against your son.

So glad we passed on him.

I'm a strong believer in BPA, but how many PMDs do the Avs really need?

You can't have too many and can always trade the lesser ones, like I said I don't mind Siemens but boy Murphy is a hell of a talent to pass up. And no I'm not Mrs Murphy but I've seen him plenty along With Gabriel to know he will be unbelievable.
